great fantasy for girls!

my friends and i were obsessed with all the tamora pierce books in 6th grade. this one started it all, and we still talk about it 4 years later. you must read this one first. also, for you nitpicky people out there, the summary on here is wrong. thom does not disguise himself as a girl since boys are allowed to learn magic. overall, great series

Wonderful read

I love all the books in this series. These books were amazing and are great rereads. I go through books quickly so to be able to have books that I look forward to rereading is great. I strongly recommend these books.

Socecery, Swash-buckling, and Cross-dressing

Alanna switches places with her twin brother, disguising herself as a boy to train as a knight. Can she keep it from the others at the palace, and what happens when she doesn't always want to be a boy? Does she have what it takes to become a knight?

This is my favorite of Tamora Pierce's books. As with Mercedes Lackey, her first character seems to be her most genuine, though as with Lackey, you can tell that Pierce learned much about how plot went together throughout this series.

This is a great book for middle school and younger high school readers. Girls get into it easier, as the heroine is a girl, but there is enough action that boys tricked into picking it up do manage to stay interested. Warning: there is *gasp* sex in the series.

As a side note, anyone having the chance to meet Tamora Pierce should do so. She's a pretty awesome woman.

I Love this series and am tired of the ranting moms

Hi so my name's Michaela and I'm 15. I read the first two books in 6th grade when I picked them up at my school library, and the other two shorty after at borders. I loved them, and I'm tired of reading all the reviews about the mothers who think these books are inappropriate for their daughters because they "do it". Children have "the talk" in 5th grade. They know how babies are made. These book aren't explicit at all and just sort of mention it in passing and in all honesty if I didn't understand what was going on than it probably would have gone right over my head. My mother was not upset by me reading these books because she trusts my reading choices. I reread this series all the time and as I get older I find more to love about it. Please, don't keep your daughters (or sons) from reading this amazing series because you're worried about nothing.

"From now on I'm Alan of Trebond, the younger twin. I'll be a knight."

In a time when girls are forbidden to be warriors, Alanna of Trebond wants nothing more than to be knight of the realm of Tortall. So she finds a way to switch places with her brother, Thom. Disguised as a boy, Alanna begins her training as a page at the palace of King Roald. The road to knighthood, as she discovers, is not an easy one. Alanna must master weapons, combat, magic -- and also polite behavior, her temper, and even her own heart. With stubbornness, skill, and daring, she wins the admiration of all around her, and the friendship of Prince Jonathan of Tortall himself. But she also makes an enemy of the prince's uncle, the powerful and charming Duke Roger....

Filled with swords and sorcery, adventure and intrigue, good and evil, Alanna's first adventure begins -- one that will lead to the fulfillment of her dreams and the magical destiny that will make her a legend in her land.
