Alternate Fairy Tale

We love this story; it is a funny twist on the Princess's "Happily Ever After". It is also clever enough to entertain a parent.

Non biased, balanced review of this book...

I am the mother of a 4yr old girl who is well beyond her years. I wanted to get some stories that took the female out of the typical helpless role so that she would see that females are not typical nor helpless unless they allow themselves to be. First I got "Paperbag Princess" by Munsch. Excellent read and I thought this would be just as good. Although not as good as Paperbag Princess, still a five star book. I read through other reviews and I understand where someone might see this text as bigotry against men, but honestly I do not believe it to be so. I believe this book is a humoristic way of allowing girls to see that they do not need to be dependent on anyone without being able to depend on themselves first. I read it to my daughter and asked her what she thought before giving my thoughts on it to her and she replied that she thought Princess smartypants was smart because she did what made her happy even though other people were trying to get her to do something differently. (her words) Now granted, if this is read and then the child coached on how "smart she was to stay single and not marry" then yes, the book is being used as a weapon rather than a tool. But this book is a good tool if used as it is meant to be. Nowhere in the book does it ever state that marriage is bad, or wrong or that men are bad or wrong. It simply tells a story of a princess who is content as she is but then is being pushed to do something that she really doesnt feel she needs to do. I suggest it as a reading to all young girls.

Hurrah for Smartypants

My children just loved this story. Very humorous, easy for intermediate readers on their own or beginner readers with a little assistance. There's not much to this story, it seemed to end too quickly. However, it's perfect for bedtime or short-story reading in the classroom. If you're worried about feminist ideals: Be careful that your own opinions don't hinder the "flavor" of this story, young children don't read between the lines like we tend to do. It's really an entertaining story for young ones!
