Leaving East Boston

I didn't care for "Mystic River." I'm from Boston and I didn't think it was "Boston" enough. This novel, however, is authentic, and everything about it is smart: great characters, believable dialogue that's full-on local, and a fantastic plot. I didn't think it was "long-winded" (as one critic wrote here). I never wanted it to end. It brings to mind "The Friends of Eddie Coyle," a touching novel about Massachusetts gun-runners, made into a film with Robert Mitchum. I hear they're making a film of this book, too. Thematically, it reminds me of the film "Leaving Las Vegas," in which unrepentant alcoholic Nicholas Cage falls for a beautiful call girl, Elizabeth Shue. In fact, the author of "Thieves" must have had this story in mind; Elizabeth Shue is the protagonists' dream girl. It's a Denis Leary, Donny Wahlberg, Ben Affleck kind of vehicle. I just hope they don't get Leonardo diCaprio to play the lead. He's so obviously a rich brat, and so NOT Boston. I'm tired of movies about Boston characters being played by actors who aren't from Boston and who get the accents/vocal tones all wrong. I mean: Boston readers - did Jack Nicholson - or Al Pacino - sound like they were from Boston to you? There are plenty of great Boston actors who can carry films about their city. Oh, well, at least you won't be disappointed by the book. It's the real deal. P.S. Even the books on tape aren't read by Bostonians, and you can tell. There were references to "Haver - HILL," etc. Know what I'm sayin'?

Prince of Thieves is AMAZING!

I read the book and, quite honestly, I only put forth the money for the audiobook because Donnie Wahlberg was reading it. I love him as an actor and he doesn't disappoint reading Chuck Hogan's novel. It's a fast moving novel and Donnie does a fabulouis job bringing an already good book to life! Chuck Hogan & Donnie Wahlberg should team up again!

Prince of Thieves

Fortunately I listened to a friend and not the reviewers and got a copy of Prince. Too long? I didn't think it was long enough! A very good read, hat's off to Hogan and his wonderful characters. Read this book and don't wait for the movie, you'll love it.

One of the finest crime novels of recent years

I write crime fiction, so I tend to be selective about what in the genre I read. While there's a lot of stuff that will blow your hair back, there's also plenty that doesn't seem to be trying very hard, or that is written without care or style.

This one ain't that.

Following four bank robbers from a rough Boston neighborhood, PRINCE OF THIEVES is that rarest of combinations: a tremendously entertaining ride, gorgeously written, with depth and detail that enhance, but never get in the way of, a breathless story. The characters, especially the men, are beautifully rendered, and the Charlestown they inhabit has grime under its nails and blood in its veins. Highly recommended.
