Super fun summer read!

Now this is a fun book! It's 700 pages so it's not the quickest summer read, but a great thriller revolving around terrorist threatening the US from the jungles of the Amazon. Fun characters and past pace, could be a heck of a movie.

21st century Bond

In the sixties Ian Fleming captured the public's imagination with his glamorized, fantastic super spy who kept the world safe from the dastardly plots of the KGB, SMERSH and evil supervillans. While Bond still has his own appeal in many ways it is all too evident that he belongs in the swinging sixties. Ted Bell's Alex Hawke is definitely a 21st century superhero. Hawke is suave, sophisticated and independently wealthy. Unlike Bond he is no driven loner but instead has a far flung network of similarly minded and talented individuals who come together on various missions to save humanity.

Just as Fleming's stories seemed to depict the true stories behind the headlines Bell's Hawke also gives the reader the feeling of peeking at the 'truth' behind the official explanations. In this fourth Hawke novel we find our hero trapped in a slave labor camp hidden deep in the Amazon jungle and run by Islamic terrorists. Meanwhile on the Texas/Mexican border a small Texas town is growing increasingly hostile to the never ending influx of illegal aliens streaming across the border. These two storylines steady progress to an exciting climax at the US Presidential Inauguration.

Fans of Fleming, or Clive Custer will enjoy this series, particularly as Bell seems to find more of his own voice and to channel Fleming less with each novel. There is a definite overall story arc to this series, though, so it would be better to begin with HAWKE and read the rest more or less in order.

SPY

The Alex Hawke saga continues. Terrorist lurking in the jungles of the Amazon plotting to destroy the United States with remote control nastiness! Fantastic story that challenges your imagination, with robot big rigs, jungle crawlies, robot tanks and super human endurance.
A re-cast James Bond, that gets the girl and then personally takes out the bad guys with all his special toys and super bad buddies. Ted Bell rides the headlines and the terroist / imigrant histeria pumped to the max.

Alex Hawke is on the hunt...

In this exhilarating tale of international suspense, New York Times bestselling

author Ted Bell's "larger-than-life hero" (Publishers Weekly),

counterterrorist operative Alexander Hawke, must save the United States from a

devastating terrorist operation.

When a mysterious explosion destroys his research vessel in search of a lost

river, Alex Hawke is captured indigenous cannibals and enslaved deep within the

Amazonian jungle. Before he escapes, he learns that a fearsome foe is preparing

for war - but against whom?

When he regains contact with his American and British intelligence counterparts,

Alex's worst fears are confirmed. The men in the jungle are highly trained

Hezbollah warriors who are planning an unspeakably violent jihad against

America. While the United States focuses its efforts on the escalating border

disputes with Mexico, Alex vos to put a stop to the deadly plot. Aware that his

mission may be the country's only hope, he travels back into the jungle to

destroy the lawless mastermind who dares to threaten America's very existence.
