My first John Connolly novel.

This novel was recommended to me and I had never read any of John Connolly's books. I found it to be very intriguing look at fairy tales and their more grim side. This is definitely not the Disney version of the fairy tales. It was fun to think through all the characters in the book and how I've seen them portrayed before. It was difficult to put down and kept me interested throughout the entire book.

Brings Back The Magic

This was the first John Connolly book I read, and I absolutely adored it. It was magical and brings back elements of childhood that strike a universal chord. The twisting of fairy tales brought an edge of humour to what could have been otherwise depressing book. I started off the New Year reading this book, and I thought it was a great way to usher in a new year, with a great new book. It rapidly joined the ranks of my very favourite books. I'm quite excited to read his other work!

Not amazing literature, but creative entertainment all the same!

I must admit, I began reading this book a while ago, and then I ended up putting it aside because it freaked me out. For the first few chapters I just couldn't understand what the book was going to be about, and when the "Crooked Man" appeared, I was taken back; Connolly's writing is kind of gross! (Now that I've finished, I see that it's in a good way, of course, because I was thoroughly entertained.) So I turned it over to my friend for her to read, since she's a bit bolder than me, and she returned it afterward, telling me to give it another shot since it wasn't what it seemed. I'm glad I did. This is no horror story, although the Crooked Man is pretty terrifying. David (the main character) is likeable, as are the Woodsman and Raphael, the guides he meets when he crosses over into a dangerous world. And the evil characters (and there are plenty of them) are certainly evil. Connolly has a creative mind. He takes Grimm fairy tales and makes them even grimmer, in some cases, and sticks them into David's world. This makes it both disturbing and interesting at the same time. The story plots along pretty well, and it can be a quick read if you're not distracted. I can't see anyone getting bored with this. The ending is pretty satisfying, it didn't leave me wondering anything, and I felt reasonably surprised. Guess I couldn't ask for much more. A nice treat was to find that a good section of the back of the book is set aside for commentary with Connelly, about the fairy tales he uses, their origins, copies of the originals, etc. But as others have mentioned, this is NOT a kids book, or for lighthearted readers! Some gory, gory stuff here. But a good book! Do read
