Incredibly Intense!

Mercy wraps you in a weave of emotion from the start. Having a wide variety of perspectives makes this book an intriguing read.

Excellent Story!

This is one of the best authors I have read in a couple of years. I am looking forward to his next book.

Good, quick, read!

A fan of Picoult ever since I read The Tenth Circle, I couldn't wait to get into this one. I wasn't disappointed. The subject matter is a touchy one, so read with an open mind. Judging won't get you very far with this book!

Not Jodi's Best, but Decent

Jamie McDonald drives into town seeking his cousin, Sheriff Cameron McDonald, and confesses to killing his wife. On the same day, a stranger enters Cameron's wife's flower shop and changes Allie's life forever. The main issue here is euthanasia, as Jamie kills his wife, Maggie, at her request to alleviate her great pain caused by cancer. But Picoult seems to only skirt the issue, even in the courtroom scenes. She could have played this up with much more drama and intensity. Instead she focuses on Allie and Cameron's marriage and the rift that Mia causes.

The main problems were the characters. I wanted to know so much more about Jamie and his past with Maggie, and not just his virtual reality business, which was a somewhat unnecessary side plot. Another irrelevant aspect was Uncle Angus's Scottish hallucinations, but I won't bore you with those details. In general, I didn't find the characters very sympathetic. Allie was a huge pushover and Cameron selfishly took advantage of that. And Mia was selfish in her own ways. She wrecked Jamie and Cam's marriage, but couldn't even face up to herself and her own needs and desires. In many of Picoult's other books, the lawyers have so much more beneath the surface, where Jamie's lawyer was very one-dimensional in Mercy. The only character I found remotely interesting was Cam's new-age hippy mom, who seemed to embrace everyone's struggles and tried to make them right. While this was not my favorite Picoult book, it was still a decent read. If you're a first time reader of hers, pick up My Sister's Keeper, Keeping Faith, or Plain Truth first.

Talk about a tear-jerker

My husband got me this book for my birthday last year. I loved it!! It's one of the few books I actually cried while reading. I passed it onto a few other people who also loved the book.

If you like Piccoult, give it a try.

Police chief of a small Massachusetts town, Cameron McDonald makes the toughest arrest of his life when his own cousin Jamie comes to him and confesses outright that he has killed his terminally ill wife out of mercy.

Now, a heated murder trial plunges the town into upheaval, and drives a wedge into a contented marriage: Cameron, aiding the prosecution in their case against Jamie, is suddenly at odds with his devoted wife, Allie -- seduced by the idea of a man so in love with his wife that he'd grant all her wishes, even her wish to end her life. And when an inexplicable attraction leads to a shocking betrayal, Allie faces the hardest questions of the heart: when does love cross the line of moral obligation? And what does it mean to truly love another?

Praised for her "personal, detail-rich style" (Glamour), Jodi Picoult infuses this page-turning novel with heart, warmth, and startling candor, taking readers on an unforgettable emotional journey.
