very easy book

This was a very easy book, made me long for my days of girl/high school drama. It was frustrating with all the nonsense that these people created and yet so funny at the same time. I recommend this book because of its very easy plot and good humor. I do have to say I absolutely hated Renee and I would have liked more to the ending.

great light read

I read this book in one day... enjoyed it very much. Cute without being to sugary or unrealistic. Definitely recommend for a quick, light read.

Making the right choice

I found this book an easy read. It came up on my Amazon recommends so I decided to check it out and thought it was a fun book. The three main characters each faces an obstacle in her newlywed months and ultimately has to decide if her marriage is worth saving. Each woman had to find her inner strength and convictions, to determine what was important to her and to her relationship. The men are all lacking a bit in the backbone department, so the women tend to make the decisions and call the shots the majority of the time. Yet the women, especially in the beginning, have such low opinions of themselves, they make poor decisions or continually make excuses for their husbands. I think I really started getting the most out of the story when the women found their true voices and started following their convictions, without apologizing for who they are and what they stand for. That was the turning point in the plot too!

What kept me involved long after I should have turned out the light to go to bed, was the uncertainty about which relationships would make it and which ones wouldn't. I think the author did a realistic job of determining who stayed in the marriage and who didn't. Light, fun, quick, one-two day book when you don't want to overthink or read too much into the story. Then ask yourself what you would do if in the same situation?

Classic Beth Kendrick

If you've read any of Beth Kendrick's work before, and liked it, you will definitely like this book. It's written with her trademark witty banter and dialog that often made me laugh out loud.

Casey, Erin, and Stella - three women who were all married by the same preacher - receive a letter informing them that they may not actually be legally married. Of course, all three of them have realized that their marriages are less than perfect. Erin has the mother-in-law from hell... really, she does! Stella, who wants nothing more than to be a mom, married a man who forgot to tell her that now that his children from his first marriage are grown, he doesn't want - and can't have - more children. And Casey is a bit of a control freak who has realized that she's unhappy because her husband isn't becoming the man she wants him to be. Each must decide if they want to be married to their pseudo-husbands.

The first-person narrative is used throughout, though from three different main characters, each narrating at different times. While I agree with other reviewers that this did sometimes make it a little difficult to follow, it was also nice because you really got to see each woman's marriage from her perspective, and you also learned how the three friends - who weren't all friends to begin with - view each other. Although each character is perhaps a little too one-sided, I think every reader will find something about these characters they can identify with.

Light hearted fun read

NEARLYWEDS by Beth Kendrick
March 26, 2008

Rating 4/5 stars

This was a fun, easy-going tale of three women who discover their marriages were never legal. Each of the women is notified that the minister who performed their ceremonies has died, and unfortunately he never signed the documents to make their marriages legitimate.

The fact is, each of the three women are actually having second thoughts on their newly married statuses, and this problem with the legality of the marriages may be a good thing. NEARLYWEDS has all three women, Stella, Casey and Erin, look at their relationships with their new husbands and now they have to decide whether to tie the knot again. All three are very different women from different walks of life, and when the three come together it makes for an interesting combination.

Told in a light tone, NEARLYWEDS is a funny look at the mistakes these women make as they try to figure out where they want to be once the dust has settled. It is anyone's guess which of these women will stay married, or move on without their husbands.

I was surprised at how well written this book was, and how much I enjoyed it. It's not a literary masterpiece but it's the type of book that one enjoys to escape. What are the odds that all three women meet? Not very likely, but one ignores facts like that to focus on the story of the three women and their very different situations. NEARLYWEDS was very enjoyable, and worth the time spent.

Everyone says the first year of marriage is the hardest . . . but what would you do if you found out that you were never really married in the first place?

In this irresistible romantic comedy from award-winning author Beth Kendrick, three wildly different women form an unlikely friendship as they try to decide whether they'd do it all again.

They've had the white dresses and the fancy receptions. But now that the honeymoon's over, Stella, Casey, and Erin have each had to face some hard truths about the men they've married and the lives they've chosen. So when the news breaks that the pastor who presided over their weddings failed to file a few critical pieces of paper, none of these newlyweds are rushing down to the courthouse to legalize their vows. Instead, the brides share their hopes, disappointments, and secrets while grappling with that pivotal question: Should they stay or should they go?
