Illustrated History of Art by David Piper

The paperback edition of this work was published in 2004 by
Bounty Books. The cover has a full color portrait of a woman
by Tissot. There are over 2000 illustrations-many in color.
Significant artistic developments from the Palaeolithic cave
paintings to Superrealism are depicted. This work has a
comprehensive picture specification list, index and special
interest section. There is a memorable Islamic work on the
Ascension of Mohammed in brilliant colors. Considerable collections of Far Eastern porcelains are depicted. Italian
Gothic sculpture is depicted fairly comprehensively. French
realists and early 20th century artists are depicted in full
color. There is an extensive section on artistic credits
and acknowledgments. The copyright has been enhanced since
1981 with printings in 1986, 1991, 2000 and 2004.
This is a perfect work for a wide constituency of art students,
cultural enthusiasts, editors, writers, museum curators and
the general public at large. It is reasonably priced and
highly recommended.

Not Fabulous as far as Specific Artists Go

Since this book is out of print, I shall endeavor to provide you with information that Amazon would usually provide.

?The physical book

The book is 10 x 12 x 1.5 inches and contains some 538 laminate pages. These exibit the main feature of the book, namely, a plethora of color images of paintings, statues and buildings of each respective time frame.

?The content

The book, while endeavoring to provide the history of art, also in its attempts creates a wonderfully beautiful book. The pages are a pleasure to look at. The book begins its analysis of art in the ancient world, continues through to the Renaissance, and eventually ends with art in the 70's and 80's. The book provides a wealth of information about the popular styles through the respective time periods. However, I find that it lacks detail on some of the more profound individauls in more modern times. Namely individuals such as John Singer Sergent whom have become ever more popular since the time the book was published. So, the book is in essence dated in that respect, and therefore cannot present an accurate view of Art history at this time.
