A great adventure seeking the Lost Continent of Atlantis!

I am one of those folks that love to read all things Atlantis - the story of the Lost Continent has always fascinated me. Andy McDermott's book, The Hunt For Atlantis, takes that quest to a level that Indiana Jones would have trouble holding on to his fedora keeping up!
Archeaologist Nina Wilde is following in her parents' steps - they were looking for proof of Atlantis' existence, and the proof that survivors of Atlantis spread out in many directions and lived and spread their knowledge to many cultures.
She is approached by a megabillionaire and his daughter to find Atlantis. There is also The Brotherhood that wants to keep Atlantis and its knowledge buried as deep as the ruins under the sea.
But who are the good guys and who are the villians? Is this the same circumstance that brought about the ending of Atlantis in the first place?
The Hunt For Atlantis brings nonstop action with the knowledge we have gleaned from Plato's works, and the legends, as well as information that has stayed with us all of these many centuries (and knowledge that was lost when the Library of Alexandria burned) that there truly was an Atlantis.
For fans of archaeology, as well as Atlantis devotees. McDermott has written a book that is not a fast read (538 pages) but a memorable one.

A Rip Snortin' Good Time!!!!!

An outstanding action adventurer from the get go and it never lets up. I was highly pleased with this one folks and that's saying alot coming from me considering I find it hard to be impressed by British authors due to the often dry nature of their writing. McDermott did a fantastic job of plotting and hardly ever letting the action wane.

I think that the 2 main protagonists Nina Wilde and Eddie Chase make a great team and I look forward to seeing them in McDermott's next 2 books, The Tomb Of Hercules and The Power Of Excalibur. This novel is more in tune to a James Rollins, Clive Cussler or Indiana Jones novel than a Dan Brown revelational type book and that's certainly not a bad thing.

I totally disagree with the reviewer who gave this book 2 stars. The Hunt For Atlantis is much better than anything I've read by Cussler. His stuff has become stale and boring. Rollins is okay most of the time, but often with his books you really have to suspend your belief. I know what you're gonna say.......It's a fiction book and you're supposed to suspend you belief because they aren't true events! That's true but sometimes Rollins has you doing it a bit to the extreme to where it really just seems fake or like it really couldn't happen when you're immersed in the story. Like those times when the story has you scratching your head and saying, yeah, right that is so ridiculous! Not the case with McDermott's first outing.

This is one great action adventure thriller that I recommend highly to anyone who loves a blend of lots of action, side splitting humor, well thought out plot, great characters and just enough mystery to keep you thinking. This one will get your pulse throbbing! Anyone who can write a 540 page book and make me read it at light speed is definitely doing something right. The Tomb Of Hercules will be out shortly, so be sure to get that one too as soon as it's available to purchase. I can't wait for it! As long as Mr. McDermott keeps writing great books like this I'll keep on buying them. Here's a high five for you Andy McDermott for a fantastic job well done!!!!!

Great read...but a few comments

This book is 656 pages long! But here's the good part. You don't realise it. It is gripping and keeps you glued to it with lots of action packed scenes, interesting and well thought out plots, lots of different and exotic settings. The characters are pretty good and you do get a feel for them. Andy McDermott has to his credit written a huge book and written it well. The whole Atlantis theme is extremely interesting and really draws the reader into it. But I give this four stars and not five. Here is why-

1. The Atlantis theme should have been deeper than just the temples and other things. We don't really get a 'feel' of the real legend.

2. As another reviewer put it, if you remove most (not all, but most) of the action sequences, you don't really miss anything. In other words there are some really long scenes that occupy many pages and even if you don't really 'read' them, you would not really miss anything important in the story.

3. The character Eddie Chase is just a bit too much of an irritating person who just jokes too much at the wrong time. One would have liked him to be serious at times. It just does not seem believable that a guy who is so 'dangerous' would be such a joking flirt virtually all the time.

4. Nina and Kari 'roll their eyes' too much. Nina and Kari are too informal with Chase who is actually their bodyguard. And that too a bodyguard who is a wiseguy most of the time.

Otherwise it is a good read. Hopefully, the next book will stick to the real plot and not use unnecessary action as an obvious pagefulling technique and also let us see a more deeper side to the otherwise great character Eddie Chase.
