Brilliant and beautiful

I don't know how this movie got into my Netflix queue, but it took my breath away. Brilliant and deceptively beautiful, and acted by "real people," not professional actors. What a lovely and realistic look at life in China, and what a moving depiction of a loving heart.

Not to be missed.

Amateurs Present Good, Simple Story

There isn't much to this story, I but I still liked it. The lead character, played by Wei Minzhi, is supposed to be playing a 13-year-old girl and was really interesting to watch, as were the young students and some of the other people in this film.

Oddly, all these actors were amateurs, real-life students and people of varied professions. It's nicely filmed, too, despite the bleak background many times. I find the dialog of many Chinese films to be very pleasing. There is very little profanity and plenty of good old-fashioned values and feelings of people, simply told. The colors in here - the reds, yellows and oranges - are always a treat for the eyes, too.

This film is very different from anything Western audiences are used to, but I recommend it for those who realize that fact and are okay with it.

Eye-opener for young and old

A colourful, heart-wrenching narrative of the hardscrabble life of children at a broken-down country school in China. Good English subtitles complement the stark scenery and vivid portraits of youthful struggle and determination. Watch this 1999 film by a world-renowned director and see our own schools -- and our own lives -- in a very different light.

Rural Chinese schools

This DVD is delightful once you get into it. Tells a story of the structure of the rural Chinese school system, what teachers have to do for their jobs, strengths and weakesses of the children, system. No beauties in this one - no ornate outfits, no colorful, elegant homes. Just down and dirty rural folks doing the best they can. I appreciated the honesty of this film.

Great movie, highly recommended!

I watched the movie with my children (18, 15 and 12). Before watching the movie, they have no idea about the poverty level in rural China and also have no idea how blessed, material wise, they are.

When the regular teacher must leave his post, he can only find a 13 year old girl to take his place. She takes her new job so seriously that she refuses to loose even one student.
