An exciting plunge back into the past

For all those who followed the Zorro series in the '50s (in my country, Italy, in the '60s) this book is an irreplaceable guide to both seasons. The plot summaries are very detailed, but most interesting are the Author's Notes and Behind the Scenes sections providing precious information about writers, directors, minor actors starring (some of them at the beginning of a successful career) as well as the unavoidable miscues and funny things occured on the set.
The book explains how Zorro evolved from being just the character of a novel to the TV hero inhabiting the dreams of children and adults alike. It also provides an interesting overview of the career of the one and only Zorro, Guy Williams (on this point I recommend Girgenti Lane's The Man Behind the Mask), before and after this popular series.
I really enjoyed reading it and watched all episodes again to check the remarks and comments made by the author.
In short, The Zorro Television Companion is a must, a way of going back to one's childhood, of holding fast to one's dreams...

Delightful Insight and Details to a '50s Favorite Show

Gerry Dooley's Zorro Television Companion: A Critical Appreciation is a Must-Have for anyone who loves the Disney Zorro series and Guy Williams. As television's first Zorro, Guy Williams made a lasting impression on children across America for generations to come and is still considered by most to be the definitive Zorro. Readers of this Zorro Television Companion will appreciate Dooley's extensive research: his interviews with people behind the scenes of this memorable TV show of the late 1950s: the masterminds, the stunt people, the writers, the actors, plus bloopers, anecdotes, and numerous rare photos of Guy Williams. It's an easy read enriched by Dooley's sense of humor and his keen eye for detail in each episode. Inside information about sets, location sites, lighting, and camera angles could be beneficial to any film student and anyone interested in early television history.

Unfortunately these Zorro shows are no longer rerunning on the Disney Channel as they did from 1983-2002! But to anyone with tapes or DVDs, I highly recommend this book as a delightful powerhouse of information and some fascinating back story trivia. Thank you, Gerry Dooley, for a timeless gift to accompany a timeless TV show.

A must-have for all Zorro fans

This book surpasses all previous attempts to document the making of this landmark television series by leaps and bounds. Previously little known behind-the-scene facts are presented, detailed episode recaps with author commentary, rare photos, etc. Truly a must have for all Zorro and Guy Williams fans. Great job, Gerry Dooley.

A Must for All Guy Williams/Zorro Fans

Gerry Dooley's words regarding Guy Williams, at the introduction of this book, tells us almost everything I feel about this amazing and touching actor: "There was something about him thatmade you feel good". Indeed, Guy Williams was a unique kind of man: We wanted to be him, and to have him as our father at the same time.
To make an accurate research of Zorro, almost 40 years after it's production should be a hard work, and the author achieved very good results.
I don't understand what I consider a lack of respect about this series (when the second season will be avaiable ?)...
"Zorro" was (and still is) the best series ever made, and this book brings us lots of interesting information about this era that is already so far away from us.
Thanks, Mr. Dooley, to share with us, Guy William's fans all over the world ( I'm Brazilian), the pleasure to feel that those days can be present again in our hearts and minds.

The legendary Zorro, the masked renegade who rode through the night defending justice in late 18th century Spanish California, became in 1957 the topic for Walt Disney Studios' first continuing live-action series and the name of a new American icon. Based on the stories of Johnston McCulley, the legend of Zorro gave birth to the archetypal dual-identity crime fighter, inspiring the creation of such future pop icons as Batman and the Lone Ranger.

This book documents the conception and success of a television legend that has endured for over 40 years. The opening chapter discusses the growth of Zorro, from Johnston McCulley's creation of the character in 1919 to Walt Disney's adaptation of the story and its 1957 ABC premier, and provides an introduction to the star actor behind the mask, Guy Williams. Subsequent chapters reveal behind-the-scenes aspects of the action show, discussing the secrets of Zorro's fencing technique and daredevil stunts and giving insight into the cast, costumes, sets, crew and music of the episodes. Chapters Four through Nine deal exclusively with the content of the first and second seasons as well as the four one hour specials on Walt Disney Presents. Plot summaries are provided for each episode.

The Zorro legend continued to enjoy worldwide popularity long after the filming of the final episode, and concluding chapters discuss the cultural significance of the legend outside of America, particularly in Argentina, where Guy Williams continued his career as the famous pop-culture hero off the screen.
