Spine of the World
If you like Salvatore's
Legend
of Dizzt you'll like this
book
. It moves right along and has a good moral tone to it. More action by one of the main characters of this legend.
One of his best.
This
book came
at a time in the series when I was growing tired of the perfect character
Drizzt
had become. Drizzt hasn't really had to struggle much since his origin trilogy all those years ago and, while he's still my favorite fantasy character of all time, you always know he'll win/make the right decision/get someone else to make the right decision/etc..
As such, it was nice to see the focus shift for awhile. Even the books that involve Drizzt over the last few years have him as more of a minor character. The Hunter's Blades Trilogy had him wandering around by himself pointlessly killing orcs for 3 books while most of the focus was on the dwarves (boy does Salvatore love his dwarves).
Wulgar's struggle throughout this book was truly heartbreaking and never have I found myself cheering for a single character so much since I first read the Dark Elf Trilogy. Drizzt may have become unapproachable and perfect but Wulfgar will always be interesting and flawed. I wish Salvatore would do more novels like this. And I feel that he really wants to, but feels obligated to throw Drizzt into every novel just to sell more copies. I want him to either focus on Drizzt or focus on someone else.
I'm so sick of Mithril Hall at this point. I GET IT! Dwarves are tough and cool, and the Companions of the Hall are the greatest thing since sliced bread but the characters seem stunted at the moment. I re-read this book and remembered why I still like Salvatore even if his recent novels seem to lack much conviction.

Wulfgar's Struggle
This story is mostly about Wulfgar and his efforts to find or destroy himself after his traumatizing 6 years in the Abyss being tortured by the demon, Errtu. He suffers PTSD-like symptoms: nightmares, hallucinations, alcoholic binges, and violent rages. He is torn by guilt and is tormented that he is no longer the proud barbarian warrior who led and reunited his people, who traveled the land with the Companions of the Hall and righted wrongs. This is a very good
book
, though I missed my favorite character,
Drizzt
(very little of him in this volume). I gave it 4 stars because I believe there is always room for improvement.

Spending time in the unimaginable torture chambers of the Abyss for even a day would be enough to break even the heartiest soul, and the barbarian Wulfgar was there for years. When he returns, his friends find him a changed man, and not changed for the better. But Wulfgar's road to redemption is one he must travel on his own, even if it leads to the bottle.
