Excellent reference for Physical Therapists
"
Vestibular
Rehabilitation
; third
edition
" is the required reading material prior to taking "Vestibular rehab- a competency based course" (A week long certification course). I had attended a couple of two day Balance courses prior to purchasing this book. I found it to be an excellent review of testing and treatment proceedures with the detailed diagrams and the accompanying CD ROM. It also sites evidenced based practice supporting BPPV treatment and several case studies, plus tables, graphs, charts and diagrams on almost every page. The Diagnostic Flowchart was particularly helpful. The information went well beyond anything I had learned in the short courses I had attended.
The book is sectioned into four parts; Section 1- Fundamentals. Section 2- Medical Assessment and Vestibular Function Tests. Section 3-Medical and Surgical Management. And Section 4- Rehabilitation Assessment and Management. Each section almost reads as a separate book. I read section four before section one without any difficulty in following the material.
***An important note about the CD ROM- the video portion does not run on current Windows applications. However, all you have to do is install the program, right click the icon, select 'Properties', 'Compatability', 'Compatability Mode', 'Windows 95', 'Apply'.

The Source for Vestibular Rehabilitation
This is the SOURCE for
Vestibular
Rehabilitation
. This is what I do for a living and this book has it all. It's really intense reading so if you are thinking about just perusing it to learn about the vestibular system, good luck. I often refer back to it after I learn a concept somewhere else and realize how deep the book really is.

Good reference but not so good as a textbook
Each chapter is written well - clearly and concisely. However, as a textbook, chapters do not connect well with each other, and there is significant overlap. For example, Chapter 2 is
Vestibular Adaptation
, and Chapter 5 is on Vestibular Compensation. (and Chapters 3 & 4 deal with postural control and vestibular system). Then, in Chapter 20, the authors discusses yet another set of vestibular recovery mechanisms. This requires a lot of work on the part of the reader to tease out overlapping concepts from additional, new concepts, making sure that the two sets of statements about a particular concept (e.g., adaptation) agree with each other. Also problematic is the fact that many terminologies and abbreviations are not used consistently across chapters. It's a good book as a reference but very difficult to use as a textbook.

Comprehensive and Practical informaton for Rehabilitation!
I find this book to be an excellent resource for professionals such as audiologists and physical therapists working with the balance disordered patient. With a comprehensive treatment of practically all areas of balance even beyond
rehabilitation
, the material in the book is extremely useful. It's the next best thing to sitting in a class taught by Dr. Susan Herdman. Her excellence in
Vestibular Rehabilitation
is clearly evident in this well written "manual". The included accompanying DVD with various videos of rehabilitation prosedures and exercises is an extremely useful supplement to the book. A must for anyone working with vestibular rehabilitation!
