One of the funniest books I've ever read
That's all I have to say about it, except I've lent this
book
far and wide to a diverse audienceof friends and family, in terms of age and sense of humor. Every one thought it was a scream and just adored it.
A terrible gift, but a funny book
So.... my grandma gave me this
book
for Christmas. Both she and one of her friends had read it, so she suggested I read it. That was not the wisest of decisions. MANY parts of this book were enormously funny, but some parts were just too inappropriate for my age level. Don't get me wrong, I liked this book a lot, but I wouldn't have bought it if I had known what it talked about. I'm used to cuss words and I understand everything that happened, it's just many parts were too much. I believe this would be a good book for adults, not me. Thanks grandma, but maybe get me a book from my age level next time.

Every re-read makes me laugh again
This is one of my all-time favorite comic
novel
s. I have given it to lots of friends, many of whom agree with me, some of whom don't get it. Give it a try because if you like it you will have a great time,
over
and over again.
Funny and funnier and smart and smarter than your hairy honor student
I frequently wonder why people purposely write reviews where they say things like "This is the worst
book I've
ever read" or "I don't see the point." Do you also wonder? Does it make you think, "That reminds me of that girl I'm glad I didn't marry"?
This book is funny, as everyone (who counts) says. But for me the real payoff was the ending. I was hooked into this book partly because I was hoping Kotzwinkle could pull it off. He'd gotten so deeply into the plot and characters that it just didn't seem possible to have an ending as good as the start (and the middle, and the whole dang thing). But he did it. He did it! And it was funny.
So, even if the comedy isn't for you, this book is a model of storytelling I wish more
novel
ists and screenwriters would study.
Who will dig this? Philip Roth fans. Kurt Vonnegut fans. Haven Kimmel fans. Nabokov fans. Richard Russo fans (I'm thinking of you folks who want something as fun as STRAIGHT MAN). Face it, fans of good prose and good stories will have a blast.

William Kotzwinkle, the esteemed author of The Fan Man and E.T.: The Extraterrestrial, is in top comic form in this outrageous and uproarious parable featring Hal Jam?a big black
bear
who finds a manuscript under a tree in the Maine woods, dons a suit and a tie, and heads off to the big city to seek his fame and fortune. What follows is a riotous magical romp with the buoyant Hal Jam as he leaves the quiet, nurturing world of the forest for the glittering and corrupt world of humans. New York and Hollywood and all that lies between serve as an expansive palette for Kotzwinkle?s wickedly funny satiric brush. The Bear
Went
Over
the
Mountain skewers
our age?s obsession with money and fame in a delicious bedtime story for grown-ups.
