Indispensable for a Soul Understanding of John's Epistles

Used as a primary text in a recent 400-level 'General Epistles' class, this commentary proved to be a well-organized and well-considered take on John's letters. Not only is it an invaluable asset to the college student in gaining a sound understanding of the intent of the author (as well as the Author), but it ties together the foundational concepts of God as Love and Light in the lives of each of His creations: people.

In addition to being a terrific aid in doctrinal understanding for both the student, as well as the believer without the opportunity to pursue a more 'technical' understanding of her or his faith, Akin writes with a genuine concern for his readers, clearly possessing a relationship with the God of Love of whom he is so fond of writing. In places this book can become nominally cumbersome, but the author generally does a fine job of explaining concepts without tying his audience down in deep theologies and dogmatics.

The key to this commentary is that it is written by a genuine believer to assist believers in understanding the nature of the God of the Bible, removing the varnish that we, as humans, naturally want to apply to Him as the result of our own experiences and foibles. It is quoteworthy in many places, and it is worth referring back to again and again as a reminder of the simplicity of the relationship we were created for by God to have with Him.

Through a verse-by-verse analysis of these three epistles, Dr. Akin (Dean of the School of Theology, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) examines the person and work of Christ, the avenues of assurance in salvation, and the ever present danger of false teaching to the Christian community. What we believe and how we live are carefully explored and shown to be essential to a vibrant Christian life.

Although the second and third letters have been somewhat neglected, the first letter has proved to be a perennial favorite of the Church throughout its history. Through careful exegesis, Dr. Akin shows all three epistles of John to be both simple and profound while offering a message for the Church in any generation.
