The situational tests described here have been undergone by most of us, in some context or another. Perhaps when applying for a job. Or for the military or for a healthcare position. The book reveals some of the issues and complexity behind the drafting of those tests and the interpretation of the results.

A key idea is how well an SJT can measure what some authors call "practical intelligence". This involves both cognition and behavioural aspects. Pure cognitive contexts are where the traditional IQ perhaps best comes into play. But the book deals with the real world, or tries to. Here, there might be a scenario where the person must choose quickly, often on the basis of incomplete knowledge. And where some choices can lead quickly to bad consequences.

Another key idea bruited about is cognitive complexity. Which is just a fancy way of saying that some scenarios are complicated to assess.
