A unique Western with plenty of action

If you like original Westerns, you'll like this book. The novel draws upon themes common to Westerns, such as revenge and justice, but it combines and twists them into a unique story. The ending in particular is quite original. It's not the stereotypical ride off into the sunset, but it's still fulfilling. Don't worry; there's still plenty of gunfights to keep the plot moving!

San Diego

North Reckoning is a good read. Well developed characters, both good and bad, get into lots of trouble. The hero, John North, finds "justice" his own way. But "hero" is a relative term because John is a hardened civil war vet willing to use strong measures to accomplish his mission. In his first novel, J. T. Jernberg wrote a fun western that's easy to read.

A Western Women Will Enjoy!

As a woman who reads a lot of fiction, I want to point out that this is a rare western that looks at things from a woman's point of view as much as the man's. Although there is plenty of action and adventure for the male reader, this novel offers a unique love story ladies should appreciate. Hannah is in a difficult relationship with one man, but finds true love with another who cherishes her. I think the characters and their relationships are very complex. It is a great novel and I heartily recommend it!

I am the authority concerning this novel

This is not so much a review as it is a confirmation. I am the author of "North Reckoning." I only want to say that I highly recommend this book to any reader that enjoys an exciting adventure, romance, and showcase of fascinating character portrayals. In my judgment, western fans will like the story a lot. Equally as interesting, I maintain that the story appeals to a very large audience in general.

A Good Old Fashioned Style Western

If you're a person who enjoys the westerns of yesteryears, you'll enjoy this one. We are immediately hooked in to the story in the first chapter by one very angry person who's out to get the people who killed his family.

There aren't too many shades of grey here. The bad guys are clearly bad guys and the good guys are good guys. There's romance thrown in for good measure as in most good westerns.

The book is set in 1875 and deals effectively with the attitudes of the post Civil War era. What I liked most was probably that there is no attempt to make us feel any sympathy for the bad guys. It quite effectively deals with the idea that some people are just plain evil. When all is said and done, you feel good at how things turned out in the end.

John North never wanted to be a killer. He had seen enough death and suffering during the War Between the States to last many lifetimes. But when a band of renegade outlaws brutally murders his parents and young brother, he knows he must avenge their deaths.

Set in Wyoming Territory in the 1870s, North Reckoning offers a tale of Old West justice as it chronicles John's hunt for the perpetrators. A chance encounter with a stagecoach robbery leads him to the town of Copperhead and reveals that his enemies have brought despair to many other people. It also introduces him to the lovely Hannah Olson, and John is instantly smitten with her.

John is joined on his quest by a variety of characters - the town doctor, a stagecoach passenger, an old prospector, an Indian scout, an army captain, and a black rancher, among others - but one of them hides a secret. As the town erupts in violence, John wonders how much more blood must be shed before he can find justice.
