Review Of Genevieve Barlow's 'Historias De Latinoamerica'

I found this billingual collection of stories more readable and more enjoyable than comparable books. I place this book side-by-side with those of Angel Flores, who's stories are more varied in length and style, and who uses more unfamiliar words. Barlow's collection required few turns of the head to the English side; it clearly used certain verbs knowing how similar they were to English verbs. After my experience with both editors, I recommend Barlow over Flores.

What Barlow lacks is a collection small reading tests at the back of the book, which Flores included in the "First Spanish Reader." For readers interested in this feature, Flores is the editor for you.

Also, I sympathize with another reviewer by stating that there is an odd presence of Mexican stories in this work. Barlow has already written a collection of Mexican stories--why are four in this work also from Mexico? Why not look elsewhere?

Excellent book

This is a fantastic book for Spanish review and practice. Very easy to check yourself and translate vocabulary because of the accurate English translations. The stories give you cultural insight,as well.

Dual learning experience with dual language book

Good book! Great to learn a little about the culture while also learning/improving my spanish vocabularly and understanding. I think it's great to incorporate reading spanish in order to attempt to fully understand the language. I liked this book in doing so, but it would be nice if there was a gradual immersion into all of the new words. I've also looked into verb books which I think would be very beneficial as there are some conjugated verbs that you can't find in the dictionary because their so different from the original word. Plus, I've heard this is very beneficial in really learning to be fluent...Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Verb Tenses by Dorothy Devney

It is a great book for someone learning Spanish to English or English to Spanish. Tales are easy to read and interesting.
