A Season of Joy

This book is based on a fictional family by the name of Steed. They are one of the many families that are in this book but they are the main one. This book is historical and most of the things in it really did happen. The Latter Day Saints moving from Palmyra just to end up in Nauvoo is one of them. It is one in a series of nine books and I think that series is a very good one. You have to read the ones before it for it to make sense though. But mainly in this novel they tell about how the saints traveled from Quincy, Illinois all the way to Nauvoo.

It tells about the suffering and trials all the saints had to go through. A main thing that happened in the Steed family in this book is that Joshua and Caroline's older boy Will, was sold to a riverboat man to work as a part of the crew. It is confusing but Will thinks his father is dead and the Mormons are the ones who killed him. But he doesn't know that some Missourians had shot him in the back and blamed it on the Mormons. But his father ended up surviving from the shot. But towards the end of the book Will is reunited with his long lost father and family...

There is a lot of romance and family problems too. They tell about how the family was split apart because of their beliefs and then how they came together because of them too. I like how he explains all about the family members and what they look like. I think my favorite is Savannah, she is four when the book ends and she is Joshua and Caroline's daughter. She has beautiful red hair and the clearest blue eyes. She is spoild and sounds absolutely darling.

A few too many ideas, but still entertaining

Personally, I think this was the point where Brother Lund had installed way too many characters of whom to keep track. Even so, they are all loveable in their own right, if not the most complex of literary beings. But the historical story truly pulls this book through as it discusses the events in Nauvoo, Illinois and the mission to England. Lots of subplots, but I guess they can be a guilty pleasure.

The Work and the Glory

I have read all 9 books several times. With each reading, I not only pick up on things that I have missed before, but I come to a much better knowlegde of who I am, and the things I stand for. Althought the Steeds are a fictional family, everything that they experience is something that a pioneer family experienced. Gerald N Lund not only tells a fantastic story but he tells an historically correct story. My life is better for having read this series. I would recommend Fire of the Covenant, and his new series on the life of Christ. They will make you cry, laugh, and feel more than you can possibly imagine.

I love this series!

I love this series. I have read the first 4 books so far and my testimony of the Gospel has grown so much. I'm sixteen years old and I recommend this series to anyone and everyone, even if you aren't a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. They are wonderful books and everyone should read them.

The Work and the Glory Volumes 1-4

I'm not one that enjoys reading at all! I got the itch to read the Work and the Glory. I only have the first 4 volumes. I COULD NOT put the book down! I read all 4 in one month, which is totally amazing to me! I felt like I was part of the Steed, Smith families, I cried and laughed, I really felt like I was one of them. It really makes you appreciate all they went through for us! Thank You Mr. Lund for opening a whole new world of reading for me.

Volume 5 is a season of rejuvenation for the Mormons as, after the horrors of the Missouri persecutions, they find refuge across the Mississippi River in Illinois, where they establish the city of Nauvoo. Despite ongoing trials, they feel that God has granted them this season of relief, hope and joy.
