This is not a book intended for beginners. It contains no grammar explanations and no glossary. The translation tries to make clear what each line means, rather than how it is constructed. Thus we sidestep grammatical and syntactical questions. The dialogs have worked well with students in their fourth or fifth semester. They can also be useful to graduate students, exchange scholars, and anyone residing in the Soviet Union for a period of work or study. In the classroom, these dialogs have had just as much success with students who are not preparing to visit the Soviet Union. The reason, we think, is the cultural information they contain: they can serve as quite vivid eye-openers, showing how the system actually works for anyone living in it from day to day.
