Complements "Sacred Then and Sacred Now"

Msgr. Moorman's useful book will give Catholics and others curious about the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, a.k.a., the Traditional Latin Mass, a grasp of the rituals, aesthetics, and, most importantly, theology of the Mass as it was celebrated before Pope Paul VI's liturgical revolution. My only qualification in recommending it comes from the fact that the book was written before that revolution. Therefore, it cannot explain to modern Catholics the differences between the Extraordinary Form and how Mass is typically celebrated now. For that, one can turn to Thomas Woods's Sacred Then and Sacred Now: The Return of the Old Latin Mass, written and released last year in the aftermath of Summorum Pontificum, Pope Benedict's instruction liberalizing access to the older form of Mass. The books do complement each other, however. Time spent with Msgr. Moorman will provide readers with an overall theology and framework, while time spent with Dr. Woods will show how the Extraordinary Form can be appreciated by modern worshipers.

The Latin Mass E-X-P-L-A-I-N-E-D

Msgr. Moorman's explanation of the Latin Mass in this small book is great. Before even beginning to explain the bits and pieces of the Latin Mass, he explains /what/ the Mass is and that means for us. The book was immensely helpful in better appreciating not only what takes place at Mass, but appreciating the Tridentine liturgy as something that must be preserved. Msgr. Moorman clearly and succinctly explains everything about the Latin Mass-- what it is, why, what is used/why, and what the prayers mean.

For anyone wishing to attend a Latin Mass, I also recommend this book as a practical point; there's a list of when to stand, sit, and kneel during the liturgy--so no worries about feeling lost!
