Worth every penny

Hands down THE BEST resource for sewers, novice and experienced. I find this version more helpful than the newer edition, the layout easier to follow and the illustrations a little more clear. If you sew, you should own it. Seriously.

very god book

I am teacher from Lithuania, the book's is very good.

A great standby reference even today!

I have had this book for a long time. I constantly look into other books. For the sewing classes I teach, I keep coming back to this one because it has really good laid out information and photos. Especially basic stuff that does not change!
I rate it as 4 stars simply because there is a newer version out and there has been a small amount of information I could not find or thought could have been laid out better.
I am looking forward to getting the newest version but will always keep the 1976 version. It is like an old friend!

A good guide, but not the best nor the only guide to have

This book was used as a text book for my sewing classes. My professor told us that this edition is MUCH better than the recent edition, and I believe her.

Some of the instructions in this book are downright WRONG. It's obvious that an experienced seamstress was not consulted when the editing of this book was taking place. Some of the pattern alterations they picture are impossible to do in real life. So, this should not be your only resource book. However, there are instructions in it that are very useful, so I would consider this a decent purchase.

Very useful, but dated

I think I actually bought this book at a garage sale a long time ago. It is really useful, but as a reference. It's so dated that reading it would be basically useless. All of the styles and many of the techniques are either unpopular or obscelete. However, as a reminder of concepts it's great. When patterns don't make sense this is really helpful to figure out what the pattern is saying. If you want something more updated, I would assume the New Complete Guide to Sewing would be more helpful.
