Eye candy

First: IANAQ. I knit rugs, using quilt patterns as inspiration. This book has a lot of inspiration.

Next: 67 pages about Guatemala and its textiles and a bit about quilting in general and all illustrated with great photos. 40 pages of specific quilt patterns which, in and of themselves, are readily available elsewhere. The patterns expressed in this fabric, however, are not.

The real power is in the gallery pictures, which are pure inspiration and you are left to work out the patterns yourself (which isn't hard).

The use of color falls in the family of Fassett, Moran and Marston, only a bit easier to live with than M&M, IMO; bolder than Beyer. Make the fabric do the work, rather than the piecing. I am encouraged to shift my knitting in a different direction by looking at these pictures.

If you're thinking you could stand to have your own colorways pulled up a notch or two in the direction of "vibrant," spend some time soaking in these pictures. Good stuff is bound to happen.

(four not five because I would much rather have seen a bigger gallery section, with full-page pictures, instead of the "how to quilt" content which is repeated everywhere.)

Using Bold Color Fabrics in Quilts

Caliente Quilts will be a useful addition to the library of quilters who are interested in using either stripe fabrics (like those designed by Kaffe Fassett) or ethnic textiles from countries like Guatemala, Mexico, Japan, South Africa, Africa, Indonesia and Thailand in their quilts. Its author, Priscilla Bianchi, is a Guatemalan citizen of Spanish descent who sells Guatemalan textiles from her website at www.priscillabianchi.com. These textiles are not widely available in the international marketplace (there are only a couple of websites that have them) and they are becoming less available now because of increasing pressures from globalization, so visit Priscilla Bianchi's website to get them while you can.

Her book will be useful for many reasons. Many of the quilts are made with stripe fabric because those are the most common fabrics made by the Guatemalan weavers. Some of her work is influenced by Mary Mashuta, who pioneered working with stripes in two books, Wearable Art for Real People and Stripes in Quilts. If you are interested in the optical illusion created when disparate boldly colored stripe fabrics are combined into square blocks shaped with four triangles sewn together, this book will help you visualize what will happen when all the fabrics are combined. The triangles are cut on point perpendicular to the stripe pattern in the fabric. Dazzling graphic effects are created when they are combined. Bianchi's "Holiday in Nebaj" series of quilts explores these effects.

Two other very useful components in the book are the "Resources" section and the bibliography. The "Resources" section lists at least a couple of web sites that I had not known about before that have very beautiful fabrics available, and the bibliography contains a list of the most important books available on Mexican and Guatemalan fabrics and costume. There are also a number of photographs of indigenous textiles and costumes from Guatemala and landscape and outdoor shots that are very beautiful.

Informative and interesting inspiration...Pricilla is talented and uses the fabulous resources she has at her fingertips to create bold and beautiful quilts....This would be a must read for the traveler. If you aren't a quilter now, you will want to be.

Brilliant is the word!

Brilliant is the word! I just love the colours and patterns in this book! Even tho' I don't have access to South American fabrics, the many striped fabrics I do have enable me to make beautiful visually three-dimensional quilts. This book is worth having, not only for the lovely quilts, but for the history and use of ethnic fabrics.
