THIS ISN'T A BOOK FOR BEGINNERS!
I purchased this book December of 2007, with the promise that it would be delivered in January. That changed, a couple of times. I finally received it May 20, 2008!
Although I've done some
jewelry
making, and
wire
working
, I'm far from an expert, but have successfully created pieces and patterns on both beginner and intermediate levels. Even though there were a number of projects (which included all of the ring projects), out of the 20 offered, that were labeled, "beginner", I would have to disagree. The rest of the bracelets/necklaces were labled "intermediate".
When first trying this art, beginners normally don't have all of the "bells and whistles" that one usually invests in, as they become more proficient, however, there are a number of projects in this book, where the author expects us to have things like WigJig Olympus ($49.95 at their site), WigJig Delphi ($23.97) and WigJig Centaur ($46.95), not to mention the "Professional Deluxe Coiling Gizmo ($199.95! And you still have to provide your own TWO C-clamps for it!!! )She did offer other coiling projects that used the Econo coiling gizmo which runs about $8 or $9. No one, in their right mind is going to invest in a ton of equipment, and tools until they know they can succeed in this artform, and like it!
I also found the pictures provided were sometimes difficult to match with the steps given, and missed the mark when it came to showing what really needed to be shown!
The author also provided us with estimated costs and times regarding each project, and these too, seemed to be unrealistic at times. Some had such wide ranges that she may as well not have included the price. (Has she checked the price of Sterling lately?)
None of the 20 projects were exceptional or unique, and the many rings she included (all beginners level, according to her) were a waste of space.
If I had been able to "thumb through" this book before buying it, I would have never purchased it. It wasn't worth the money or the time invested.

Beautiful Wire Jewelry
I think Susan Ray has done an excellent job with this book. I own 100+ books on
jewelry
/beading, and this one is on my favorite list.
The designs are basic, but very pretty, and inspiring. One could easily change things up a bit to make it your own. Tons of clear color photos, many which are close ups. There is a section for using the wig-jig included with the directions for
working
wire
by hand.
The estimated prices are off, but the way sterling silver has shot up, it is difficult to keep current. My suggestion would be to add 15-25% to her estimates.
The directions are clear and easy to follow. This would be a good beginner to intermediate book. There is also a 2 page resource guide in the back of the book, after a nice glossary and index.
I love all the color photos, since I seem to be able to relate to them better than hand drawn. I think I'll start on the rings.....
