Military Aircraft in All Their Finery!

Nose art books are a popular part of military aviation history. Ernie McDowell's 1993 FLYING SCOREBOARDS volume for Squadron/Signal is a fun example of the genre, a nicely-done, wide-ranging, 80-year survey of kill and missions markings carried by aircraft of various nations. Modellers would especially love this book.

FLYING SCOREBOARDS features chapters on WWI, WWII, Korea, Peacetime, Vietnam and Desert Storm. The WWII chapter, the largest in the book with 52 pages, has sections on USAAF fighters & bombers, USN aircraft, British a/c, Russian a/c, German a/c, etc. Though many of the shots have been seen previously, it's a treat to see them all brought together under one cover. Then too each photo is well captioned unlike other nose art books with captions on the order of "8th P-51 with 12 kill markings."

McDowell's book is a modeller's delight - over 200 black & white photos, 22 color pix and five pages of first-rate Don Greer color profiles.

In short, FLYING SCOREBOARDS is a fun guide to aircraft markings featuring a veritable smorgasbord of aircraft - Spads, P-38s, Bf 109s, Corsairs, Hellcats, Tonys, Lancs, B-29s, B-52s, A-4s, A-10s, etc. A fun book, it comes highly recommended.
