Italian AFVs in WW II Action!

Paging through Nicola Pignato's survey of Italian World War II tankettes, tanks, armored cars and other AFVs, you wonder: what was more dangerous duty - being assigned as a crewman in an Italian tank or a German sailor on a U-boat? This Squadron/Signal photo-history doesn't answer that question but it does give the reader a nicely illustrated introduction to the subject of Italian AFVs.

Italy entered World War II with a motley colletion of rivet-queen tinkertoy tanks best suited for parades or dealing with poorly armed tribesmen. When the L 3-33, 3-35 and M 11-39 models came up against Allied armor, they found themselves hopelessly outmatched. Even later, improved models such as M 13-40 and 14-41 couldn't go one-on-one with M3 Lees, Shermans, British Crusaders, etc. Likewise Italian AFV production and R&D couldn't begin to match that of Britain or America. The result: brave men sacrificed for no purpose.

Pignato's book not only describes various AFVs but also Italian unit organization, armored doctrine and camouflage. It features over 120 black & white photos and eight pages of color photographs and sideviews by the always excellent Don Greer.

All in all, a great package and easy on the pocketbook.
