Nicely Done Summary of IJN Heavy Cruisers!

Japan's WWII heavy cruisers hold a fascination all their own, their massive 'pagoda' superstructures seemingly a random piling of deck upon deck. As speedy as they were top-heavy, they bristled with four or five turrets and deadly 'Long Lance' torpedoes. In action throughout the war, they established a reputation as heavy hitters. Author Wayne Patton summarizes these fascinating warships in this volume from Squadron/Signal.

Patton's book is typical S/S fare - tons of photos, four pages of great color profiles by Don Greer, 20 line drawings of the different classes of IJN heavy cruisers and a comprehensive, informative text. As an added bonus, S/S added an extra 8 pages.

Though the battle history of these ships is interesting, it's equally interesting to read about the continuing battles the ship designers had with the Naval General Staff over armament, tonnage, etc. and the flawed designs that resulted when the designers gave in to Staff demands.

So, if your ears perk up when you hear someone talking about "Mikuma," "Tone" or "Haguro," this book is for you. It's one of the best S/S Warship volumes I've seen. Pick up a copy, you won't be disappointed!
