Good book! Useful and entertaining
As a teacher I have found this book a useful tool in the fourth grade classroom. My students dutifully looked up words and got caught up looking at the humorous illustrations. Living in Hawaii, they particularly liked the drawing accompanying the words "lay" and "lei," which shows a lei-bedecked hen sitting on her eggs, squawking "Aloha!" They also liked the drawing of a snorkeler and a manta ray singing "Do, a deer, a female deer/Re, a drop of golden sun." (Illustration of "ray" and "re.") The students were intrigued to read on the back cover that the author's own students were instrumental in creating the entries in this
dictionary
. I find this book gives easy-to-grasp definitions and makes graphically clear distinctions between
homophones
. I recommend its use in the classroom and at home.

An Outstanding Masterpiece!
This book is one of the best I've ever read. It is thorough and complete, with beautiful illustrations which both bring the text alive and encourage the reader to learn more. I learned so much from reading it. It increased the span of my vocabulary incredibly. I have a much stronger understanding of
homophones
and have corrected my simple mistakes I once overlooked. It has encouraged me to dig deeper into the world of comprehension. This book is a masterpiece which should have a special place on everyone's bookshelf.

Easy to read, thorough, very interesting!
I bought the book to improve my 10 year old daughter's spelling and vocabulary. We find the many uses and spellings of the same sound very interesting. The definitions are straightforward and easy to understand. We discovered words not in our paperback
dictionary
.
Homophones
: An
Illustrated
Dictionary
of 803 common and unusual pairs, trios, and quads of words with different meanings and spelling that sound alike. Three cartoon characters, Kenia the Lynx, Oscar the Tapir, and Sid the Hare, illustrate the meanings of hundreds of homophones in a humorous and endearing way. Children given review copies sat themselves down and immersed themselves in the antics of the anthropomorphic animals relating easily to both the drawings and text. Adults enjoyed solving the puzzle of which homophone went with which picture. Students of all ages and backgrounds benefit from building on their existing vocabulary and expanding it a hundred times while having fun in the process.
