Sappy, but satifies the need for a loving Heavenly "Papa"
For many years I was the unrepentant feminist in a fundamentalist women's Bible study. One night the other women began describing their god. He was unforgiving, incapable of healing us of past mistakes and had a particular vendetta against women. I'd never known the god these women described, and frankly I didn't want to. So I quit the Bible study. Some time later I read in Genesis 3 that the devil, not God, has a vendetta against women.
After this, I began noticing the way God's character was portrayed in church sermons. He was at best indifferent, and at worst sadistic. Feeling that I was wasting my Sunday mornings worshipping the devil, I left my church as well.
It was at this time that I read "The
Shack
." Though the story is in many places sappy (which explains the 4-stars, vs. 5), it frequently brought me to tears, and filled a deep hunger I'd had for the loving Heavenly Father that Jesus preached in his Sermon on the Mount, but who I hadn't heard preached in church for many years. It may have kept me from turning away from my faith altogether, which I was contemplating doing at the time.
I'd describe much of the theological criticism of this book as straining the gnat and swallowing the camel. Which is more harmful: portraying God as a woman or portraying him as the devil? As a former charismatic, I've always thought of the Holy Spirit as a woman. Isn't this the Shekhina, the female essense of God? I wouldn't waste my time belaboring that point, though. To me, the nature of God's love is more important than the metaphysical representation of the Trinity. In that regard, this book was a timely gift from God.

The Shack
Confusing at times when the book referenced "God", "Jesus Christ", and the "holy spirit".. probably because of my being raised in Catholicism.. Beautiful story, very engaging and spiritual. Supportive at times of most non/religious beliefs.

Several friends had recommended the book, but I wasn't overly enthusiastic UNTIL I actually began reading the book.It touched my emotions and my spirit. It is different, so it may not be for every reader.
refreshing
Renewed my faith 3rd time reading this book. I ordered extra copies to give away. I encourage everyone who reads this to do the same. #1 book of the year.

Mackenzie Allen Philips' youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned
shack deep
in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later in the midst of his Great Sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change Mack's world forever. In a world where religion seems to grow increasingly irrelevant "The Shack" wrestles with the timeless question, "Where is God in a world so filled with unspeakable pain?" The answers Mack gets will astound you and perhaps transform you as much as it did him. You'll want everyone you know to read this book!
