Our new User Friendly discovery

We're just back from our second visit to Kauai and the Big Island of Hawaii after a 7 year absence. We chose the Kauai Trailblazer book since it covers so many hikes which my wife and I do to unwind. What we found this time were a whole lot of places a few paces off the standard tourist track. Their take on Kauai is different from all the other guides since it mainly lists all the freebie adventure possibilities. Getting on the trails and snorkeling costs zero and since they put alot of detail in their directions like round trip distance and difficulty it saved us precious vacation time. We got alot of mileage out of it.

The writing is clear and the color section spectacular. We didn't notice the Best Of section at first but once we got there we referred to it constantly. Their picks on where to snorkel in certain areas were the BEST and even knowing where to enter the water and check for outgoing currents was valuable. A super purchase for a much needed vacation in paradise.

A worthwhile travel guide for Kauai

When we travel we like to be on the go. We selected this guide mainly for it's broad range of activities. We liked its portability and user friendliness. Hikes ranged from hard to easy and their cultural and historical input gave us another level of appreciation for the place besides its beauty.

This guide is nicely detailed and designed for quick reference. The authors have divided up the island into geographical wedges so we could hit everything to see in one swoop as we drove the main highway. We were on a tight budget and it paid for itself many times over with its itinerary ideas and on-the-ground support.

Back from Kauai

Navigating Kauai's hiking trails was a cinch and thanks to the Kauai Trailblazer guide we didn't have to randomly stumble upon them. Their full page road maps and directions are so great, they're all that we needed and this was our first time hiking out in the tropics.
Going by the numbered highway markers in their Parking paragraph sure helped, no GPS was needed. Sometimes the signs were overgrown with grasses up in Waimea Canyon and hard to spot so it was good they spelled it out.
The authors emphasize not straying from the routes and to watch out for dropoffs which was advice repeated by the park employees we ran into. Topo maps not needed since wandering off trails spells trouble - there was so much overgrowth, We found pink ribbons in some places that pointed the way. For every hike the distance in miles was spelled out. That made it simple to understand how long we'd be out and sometimes that meant all day.
There's more than just hiking in this book and we mixed up our otings with a little snorkeling and evenkayaked up the Wailua river and hiked into Secret Falls. There is a large photo of it on pg 98 which made us want to go.
Kauai was worth visiting and so was buying this book. I highly reccommend it!!!!
