Meghan's World is a gift to families with SPD!

Meghan's World has been a god-send to us. My daughter was recently diagnosed with SPD and Meghan's World was like holding up a mirror to her. She was able to see herself in every page and for the first time not feel so alone in her struggles. Her face lit up as she began reading about Meghan's challenges to hold it all together when internally she wanted to scream and run away. It has helped her to feel confident about not only her difficulties, but also her many therapies. Seeing all that Meghan did to feel better has made her many trips to the many therapists easier to swallow and far less scary. My daughter also began immediately to think of what she too could do to help others like "Meghan" had helped her - what a wonderful cycle.
As a mom, it is difficult to put into words what our journey with SPD has been like, but having something I can give to her and to relatives and friends to say, "See, we are not crazy. This is a real thing that many people deal with and is not cured by harsher discipline!" This alone has been a great gift.
I highly recommend this to anyone who's child is suffering with SPD (especially those whose children are "Overreactive" - as is my daughter and Meghan.) It will truly bless your life!

Understanding SPD From a Child's Perspective and Suggested Treatments

This book will help children with SPD and their siblings/friends/parents in multiple ways: 1) It will help children with SPD to know that other people feel as they do 2) It will help those without SPD better understand the struggles of a child affected by SPD, and 3) It willlikely open a line of communication for those reading through the book together. 4) Finally, and certainly not least, the author offers suggestions and references for therapy and treatment. A well thought out and presented early reader that is a true success story! You may even find it inspiring.

Excellent for children with Sensory Issues

I was impressed with how much comfort my five year old felt from this book. She said things like, "she is just like me!" It was nice to see her feeling understood. For a child with sensory issues, it is hard for most people to understand what she goes through. I am planning to share it with my extended family as well~

Gentle Touch

This is an excellent book about a young girl who has Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD). SPD is a very real condition that affects countless people and it is common among the autistic population.

Meghan has extraordinary inner resources. She somehow manages to get through the sensory maze of each day when her inclination is to go into flight mode. She finds certain materials and textures unbearable to touch and finds noise just as painful and loud as anybody on the autism spectrum.

How I wish I'd had this book when I was growing up! Meghan has been such an inspiring literary character who takes the stigma out of having sensory issues (and autism is a condition that is neurobiological and sensory) and lets readers know that they are not alone. I think of my own aversion for fingerpaint and other unpleasant substances and how many people I know who cut the tags out of their clothing because the tags irritate their skin. This book does a real service in describing sensory integration techniques, such as Willbarger's Brushing method (this is not for everybody - some highly charged and very sensitive people might find the brushing irritates their skin and resist it) and the specialized gym equipment speaks to real tolerance. Meghan is fortunate to have been "born" into a time when greater understanding of autism and other sensory conditions is being shown.

This is an ideal book for families, educators and medical professionals. Sensory Processing Disorder is a condition that CAN be helped and people who have it CAN live rich and full lives.

Same as my son

I bought this book because my son who is 4 was diagnosed with SPD last year. He had his problematic sensory behavior since he was birthed, but due to all the misdiagnosis we went a long path to finally knew what was going on with my son. Reading this book with my son helps him to see that there are other kids same as him, he is not alone or strange. Also, helping him to realize that there are always solutions.

MEGHAN'S WORLD is a true story about one girl's triumph over Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD). The story validates children's feelings and offers parents and teachers a look into the world of a child suffering from SPD. This book was inspired by Meghan's first school show and her behaviors before, during, and after the event. The story briefly explains the therapies Meghan did to help her overcome SPD and lists resources for reference. MEGHAN'S WORLD ends with an "About Me" page so parents can start a dialogue with their child - leading to insight about their own child's needs and wants. MEGHAN'S WORLD is a great book for children with diagnoses on the autism spectrum. It helps to promote understanding and social growth. Parents and teachers can help their children/students grow into their own accomplishments by learning how Meghan has dealt with the following issues: * Sensory Modulation * Sound Sensitivity * Social Insecurity * Hypo/Hyper-Responsiveness * Tactile Defensiveness * Visual Perception * Sensory Processing * Allergies/Food Intolerance
