Lesson 1: Stretchsitting has already changed my life, I am pain free most of the time. This book makes it easy to see what you can do and what you should not do. It has pictures that are clear and helpful accompaning the text. It doesn't matter what chair I am in or how long I have to sit, I just practice my Stretchsitting. I have given myself the time to make sitting correctly natural, as is suggested in the book, and now I am getting ready to go to Lesson 2: Stretchlying On Your Back and learn to lie down properly. This is something everyone can do. So far for me it has given back the hope that I can go past "Remeber When It Didn't Hurt" to really not hurting again.

Postpartum back pain relief

During or immediately after childbirth, I sustained a herniated disc in my lower back with severe pain and numbness through my hip, leg and foot. My doctor suggested that my back could heal naturally over the course of six months if I did not aggravate it at all - impossible to do while lifting an infant several times a day. I was debilitated and on the floor for nearly three weeks and by about 10 weeks, I still could not lift my arms above my head nor put socks on by myself. I found Esther's book at the library by chance and after just a day or two (reading and practicing the first two lessons) was able sit comfortably for hours and to lift my arms without crippling myself over in pain - ie. reach things in my kitchen and begin to resume normal activity. After following all of the methods in this book, my progress accelerated tremendously and I found examples of safe postures for holding my baby and for lifting him (repeatedly). It's been 17 weeks now and I am well on my way to resuming normal activities again... something that, despite physical therapy and commitment to prior exercises, seemed hopeless. Esther's method is logical and consistent with my own experience traveling and living in developing nations. The postures that she recommends are lost in our society but not difficult to learn. They promise a long-term solution to back pain treatment and to improved health in general.

This book and Esther Gokhale's program have been life changing! I had several debilitating incidents from a lower back injury and was developing sciatica. This program saved me. I'm once again thoroughly enjoying horseback riding, yoga and running with a new awareness and strong body. This book is a great place to start as it will give you an overview of the Gokhale holistic approach - how the spine works, ancient wisdom from many societies, how the current culture influences our posture in unnatural ways, well defined methods you can apply quickly in your daily life, easy to follow instructions, amazing photos to reinforce the concepts, etc. Bottom-line, it works and I practice it all day long - not just at the gym. My only regret is I didn't find this method ten years ago!

One of the most important books I've purchased

I think buying this book may well be the most successful expenditure I've made in a lifetime of seeking relief from back pain. I have followed the eight lessons and can report that my pain is steadily receding. It is evident that Esther Gokhale went to great lengths to compose a book that is easy to understand and follow, illustrated with so many pertinent illustrations (I was amazed at how many photographs she included--all very effective), and a great set of exercises described in the Appendix. If you can read, you can follow her method and get good results--it's that simple. If you have back, neck, or shoulder pain, you really need to get a copy.
