An important book to read

This is a book we should all read. It is interesting to understand how different cultures survive difficult times. Mulberry Child gives brilliant insight into a child's life before and during the Culteral Revolution. The author's family were blindly loyal to the communist party even though they were severly punished by the Government for things that they should have been given praise for. Jian Ping has an easy attractive style of writing and I thoroughly enjoyed reading Mulberry Child and hope there will be future books by this author

Mulberry Child: a memoir of China

There are a number of memoirs of growing up in China when re-education was enforced. Jian Ping's treatment of this period is enhanced by its fine writing, wonderful photos and a compelling narrative. The family photos enhanced the text and made the story even more memorable. And a mulberry tree around the corner of my house will continue to remind me of that difficult time.

Mulberry Child

I found this book so enjoyable. I felt like I was watching a movie. The emotions and the descriptions of people and moments are so vivid, that made me feel the feelings of those involved in the story. I look so much forward to read another book of this author.

A great book

This book continuously held my interest. It gives insight not only into the lives of an unusually loving and gifted family in China, but also into a frightening era of Chinese history--the cultural revolution. Jian Ping writes in an engaging, open way about her experiences and those of her parents and siblings during a difficult time in China's history as they withstood almost unbearable living conditions yet survived to prosper in their country.

Mulberry Child: A Memoir of China is the true story of a childhood before, during, and after the Cultural Revolution in China. Jian Ping's father, Hou Kai, a high-ranking government official, was falsely accused of treason during the Cultural Revolution--he was detained, beaten, and publicly shamed. Her mother Gu Wenxiu, a top administrator of a middle school, was paraded in public and imprisoned by the Revolution Committee and the Red Guards--both driving forces of the Cultural Revolution. Facing abuse and deprivation, Jian Ping's family stands steadfastly together, from her aging grandmother, a frail woman with bound feet, to her parents and siblings. The traumatic impacts of their experiences shape the course of their lives forever.

Based on her own memories, as well as interviews and research, Mulberry Child is a family saga and a tale of resilience, a coming of age story told through the eyes of an innocent child. Mulberry Child allows us an insider's look into a closed-off world and is written with compassion in honest and intimate language.
