A Book To Appreciate

I enjoyed reading Confession of Faith and found it very worthwhile. The writer is a Norwegian woman who immigrated to Texas in 1847. Just prior to the Civil War, she wrote the confession as guide for her sons. It's not a didactic sermon. In it she expresses her thoughtful reasoning of what she believed and what she had doubts about within her faith, as well as practical applications for carrying out one's beliefs. Its message reveals a mother's love and concerns for her sons and is as appropriate for today's moral problems as it was a century and a half ago. The notes by the editor, Dr. Charles H. Russell, who holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University, clarify the historical context of Elise's views. Only 118 pages, Confession of Faith is worth reading in small sections more than once and would make a fine gift for a loved one.

Dr. Charles H. Russell has done an excellent job in editing and bringing to life Elise Waerenskjold's "Confession of Faith." Waerenskjold intended for this striking revelation of her innermost being to provide her children with religious and ethical direction. Surely it must have, since her passionate views have merit today. But in addition, told from the pespective of a strong, independent woman, "Confession of Faith" also provides contemporary readers -- religious and secular alike -- with a unique view of life on the American landscape during the Civil War period.
