The BEST hero that NOBODY HAS EVER HEARD OF!!!

I was first introduced to Booster through his plot in the 52 storyline and his episode on the Justice League Unlimited cartoon. Both left me wanting more. He's superhero in it for the fame. He sells product endorsements on his costume, and pays off actors to pretend to be villains that he can take down for the media. I am crazy about this character.

So when I saw that he had gotten his own series I had to pick it up. Here, he is recruited by Rip Hunter to try to repair holes in the time stream that are being manipulated after the events in 52. SPOILER ALERT.... He crosses paths with Jonah Hex (in the Wild West), Barry Allen (in his prime), and Sinestro (in a time when he is the universe's greatest Green Lantern). Then he tries with all his might to undo some of the greatest tragedy's in DC history (the paralysis of Barbara Gordon at the hands of the joker, and the death of his best friend Blue Beetle).
Best of All, to do all this, he has to turn down the fame that he has been seeking all his Life. It is a GREAT story.

Surprisingly Good Book Following Up 52

Geoff Johns is the DC equivalent of Brian Michael Bendis. He just can't seem to write a bad story. This story picked up after 52 and really shows who Booster Gold is and should be. Excellent characterization!

Everyone's favorite self-centered superhero is back in action!

Some of my fondest childhood comic book memories involve the Justice League International series written by Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis. You see, I always thought that was what a superhero team book was supposed to be. Nothing too serious, no heavy hitters, just some straight up fun and laughs with a bunch of no names as the main cast, and big stars in the DC Universe limited to cameos. While most people loved Grant Morrison and his elite cast of JLA, I longed for a return to the days of Justice League International. The TPB market provided us a few brief flashbacks such as I Can't Believe It's Not the Justice League, but until Booster Gold, there wasn't a regular series with a mission to bring back the classic moments of Booster Gold and Blue Beetle.

Booster Gold: 52 Pick-Up takes off directly from the 52 TPBs. If you haven't read those, they're not required reading to understand what is going on, but they do fill you in on some of Booster Gold's foundation for this series. (They're also one of the few DC major event mini-series worth reading these days!) Booster Gold begins this series recruited by Rip Hunter to fix some of the holes created in the space and time continuum by that pampered crybaby Superboy Prime. Apparently there are some dark forces at work attempting to exploit these holes and Booster Gold must fix major events in DC history before they get out of control and change the present and future forever.

The reason Rip Hunter picks Booster Gold as his prime operative is for lack of a better explanation -- he's a loser! No one would ever expect the superhero who once sold advertising space on his uniform to be the prime force behind time travel repair and while no one loves face time better than Booster Gold, it dooms him to a life of superhero parity with not even big shots like Superman and Batman knowing he is keeping them alive. Actually, he's keeping Jonathan Kent's grandfather alive, which makes sure Superman is recovered on Earth by the Kents, which keeps his timeline intact, which.... well, you get the picture!

With just six issues collected, Booster Gold already explores several major landmarks in DC history from the The Killing Joke and Barbara Gordon's paralysis, to Jonah Hex in the wild west, to Guy Gardner's first days as a Green Lantern, to Barry Allen and a young Wally West exploring the Speed Force. But perhaps the best storyline, and one that will thrill all fans of the early JLI days, is an attempt to rescue Ted Kord from his assassination at the hands of Maxwell Lord. That story is collected in issue #6 and ends this TPB, but you'll need to read this book to find out what happens.

The pencils in Booster Gold: 52 Pick-Up are done by none other than Dan Jurgens, the creator of Booster Gold and writer/artist of the original 1980's series. But it's the writing by Geoff Johns and Jeff Katz which realizes the true essence of Booster Gold from his JLI days that carries the book. It seems Johns can do no wrong when giving a mainstream DC superhero his own series, and the Booster Gold series is not an exception. It's apparent that Johns loves the character as much as us readers.

If you're sick of the ever increasing trend by publishers DC and Marvel to darken their superhero universes, and are still game for visits to the timelines that made you a comic book fan for life, Booster Gold is your book. It's also a DEFINITE RECOMMEND for anyone who loved the JLI series by Giffen & DeMatteis. It's probably the closest we've come to a new series that relives the great moments in the early Exiles run by Marvel. (Before that series jumped ship!) Word is that a new writer will soon takeover so hopefully DC will pick someone who loves the essence of this character (rumor is that Dan Jurgens will once again write the series) because it will make for several more years of enjoyable reading.

Top Notch Team

One of the best blends of comic lore and modern story-telling I've read in a while... A simple pleasure to read.

A surprisingly spectacular read

Who knew that a new ongoing series starring Booster Gold could be this good? Co-written by superhero writer extraordinaire Geoff Johns and Jeff Katz, Booster Gold: 52 Pick-Up is an often funny, sometimes harrowing, and surprisingly spectacular read that doesn't fail to entertain. Taking place after the events of 52, this hardcover collection finds the time-traveling Booster Gold, his trusty robotic partner Skeets, and the master of time himself Rip Hunter keeping an eye on the multiverse and all it's inhabitants. Ranging from an encounter with Sinestro, to coming face to face with legendary western icon Jonah Hex, to a harrowing attempt to save Barbara Gordon, and to finally seeking to save his late friend Ted "Blue Beetle" Kord; Booster Gold fires on all cylinders. Johns and Katz also manage to provide enough humerous moments without the book itself degrading into self-parody, and both writer's sheer love of the DC universe can be plainly seen as well. Dan Jurgens, the man who created the character of Booster Gold in the first place (as well as killed Superman, sorry, I can never not mention that whenever Jurgens' name pops up) provides the artwork here, and while I've never been much of a fan of his style, it works pretty well here. Even if you have never been a fan of Booster Gold before (and let's face it, not many have), you will definitely enjoy 52 Pick-Up regardless. As entertaining and enjoyable as it is, you can't really go wrong here, and in those respects alone, the book is worth checking out at the very least.
