An Innocent and Appealing Book

This series first came to my attention as part of a book giveaway on a website blog. I thought the books sounded perfect for my granddaughter. We missed the date for entering the giveaway so I decided to order the books. Thanks to Amazon's 3 for 4 deal I was able to get all eight in the series so far. I have never been so pleased with a book purchase. The books are beautiful and have color pictures to go along with the stories.

Marigold is a sweet character who beautifully grows into her newly discovered role as fairy. Her friends have lively personalities and the girls all get along with each other. We learn some things about the fairy world and the girls go on an adventure together. They are supervised by older fairies.

Parents and grandparents can't go wrong with this book. There are no questionable subjects here that are better left to older teen books. There is good information in the book about preserving nature and recycling. The folklore included in the story is charming and captivating, albeit much different than that in other fairy tale books. I always loved gnomes but they are seen in a much different light in this story. And you'll never guess what? We get to see gremlins in this book via a colorful picture. (Gremlins are usually invisible.) There's something to pelase pet lovers here too, a sweet dachshund who knows how to take care of gremlins.

An all around pleasing and well written children's book with appeal to many people and nothing to worry about as far as subjects.

Kids Can Make a Difference

This book encourages healthy and active living, working on good projects and helping in the community. And it lets kids know they can make a difference if they put forth the effort. The characters in this book are great role model kids. They work together and do good things. This is a great positive influence book. I recommend it to read to small children and for young readers around age eight and up.

A modern fairy tale about fairies...

...as opposed to princesses or peasant girls. Very refreshing. I found I liked reading about actual fairies who are also human beings by the way. The girl characters were very interesting to read about, and facing the challenge with them was a fun experience. My kids really got into the teamwork aspect of what the fairies and brownies were doing. We are looking forward to reading more books about fairies, and we are going to make some fairy wands to play with. These are not the fairies I remember from growing up, but that is a nice quality about this book. It is unexpected and surprising which is something I am looking for in children's books.

More than just fairies, rainbows, and missions to rescue...

This series has some magical artwork and some incredibly imaginative adventures within it, that is for sure. However, in addition to the delightful and creative sides to it there is a strong current to NOT be honest with your parents throughout the entire series.

The rational is that they are fairies...however...since the nature of these books is to encourage role playing, then I feel it is important to mention this point. Stranger danger and child seducers are too big a threat in our world these days. Children are more likely to find one of those rather than a real fairy mentor.

One of the first biggest warning signals regarding adults who should be avoided are those who encourage secretive behavior from a child's parents rather than honoring ones. That message needs to be supported. This series, as enchanting as it is, does not do that.

If J. H. Sweet had, I would have rated it much, much higher. Without it, it falls from the excellence its creative and enchanting sides deserve.

Enjoyed it Very Much

My kids and I liked this book very much. We have been reading the series a little out of order but it hasn't taken away from our enjoyment of it. This first book has a fun-filled storyline with plenty of colorful illustrations to add to the excitement. Almost as soon as the main character Marigold finds out she is a fairy, she has to go on a mission with her friends and her dog Peanut to face gremlins and get the Feather of Hope back. There are a lot of small details in this book that make it extra interesting in my opinion as far as a children's books. An small appearance by a gnome character adds color to the story, and we find out that gnomes themselves add colors to nature. Marigold's aunt likes Rollerblading. Dogs and cats can understand fairies when they speak in fairy form. Fairy wands come in many varieties. Fairies have special gifts that correspond to their individual fairy spirits. For example, the dragonfly fairy is very fast and Marigold can repel bugs. We like the little details that make this a fun book to read and read again. Well done.
