The Lottery

Excellent book, well written. I loved it and have recommended it to several friends.

The main character, Perry, will stay w/ me for a long time...

I just finished reading "Lottery" last night--finished with tears in my eyes. Since I read about 100 pages of fiction a day, this is somewhat remarkable. So I simply had to share how much I enjoyed it, how impressed I was the writing, and how much I look forward to reading more novels by Patricia Wood in the future.

While my reading habits lately tend to run more toward escapist novels that provide a "mental vacation, I will pick up "literary fiction" when I start to feel my mind starving for something more substantial than brain candy.

But "Lottery" fills the bill on ALL accounts. It is so beautifully written--dare I say "lyrical"--even while using very simple first-person language of the main character. Compare it to "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime", where that narrator is autistic, and "Lottery" manages to be just as authentic, but much more emotionally satisfying. The story itself sucks you in immediately. You can smell the grandmother's sofa, hear the boats bobbing against the dock, taste the fake crab sandwiches. And the characters... Well, Perry is going to stay with me for a long, long time.

Though the reader roots for Perry all along, and knows he'll prevail in the end, the manner in which he does so is both surprising and touching. A GOOD READ THAT ALSO REMINDS ONE OF WHAT'S MOST IMPORTANT IN LIFE.

Children make the best friends, they are so real.

I was in the middle of reading another book, I bought Lottery, read it in three days in between making dinner, going to Stitch & Bitch and getting ready to go camping, just didn't want to put the book down, sorry it's over now. I read a lot of books, some I don't like the endings not so this book, thought it was perfect.

Awesome Book!

This is a wonderful story and a very well written book. I loved it. IT made me feel like I was a part of the story. I felt like I knew the people in the book and it made me laugh and cry. I highly reccomend this book to everyone.

Oh! the possibilities

What an innovative plot: A mentally challenged man wins the lottery. Imagine the possibilities of that story...now stop thinking about all of the plots and sub-plots that you might invent to go along with such an excellent story line - and imagine a story that is (for lack of a better word) lame.

Don't get me wrong, it was a descent enough story. But the story line is simple; and despite the fundamental simplicity it still manages to follow the characters to implausible ending. The characters are transient. With the exception of the main character, all of the others are one dimensional with only a brief "aside" (which seems to be written almost as an after thought) to explain who they are and how they got there.

If you like Lifetime Movies, or you are interested in a feel good confetti read, this is for you.

A funny, poignant, and wise novel about a very rich underdog who shows everyone just how little his IQ says about his smarts.
