A Fair Introduction to a Sorely Neglected Topic.

I typically will write reviews on books I absolutely love and those I feel need some negative feedback. With this book, I could have gone either way...i.e. 4 stars or 3.

My reasoning for giving it only 3 stars is that while the authors deserve special applause for even attempting this topic in the first place, they utilize a lot of man-made reasoning.

I felt that the authors needed to stress the exclusivity of "the Secrets kept by God," as well as the need for prayer and Divine illumination to be able to comprehend that which was hidden in God from ages past, but is now being made know to His elect. I Corinthians tells us that God purposed to hide His wisdom from before the foundation of the earth. The fact that the authors do not stress this was a deliberate act by God, gives this book a slight "man-centered flavor." The writers take an intellectual approach to spiritual things instead of an experiential/supernatural one. To paraphrase Tozer, one can hear Truth all day long and not be the better for it without Divine revelation; revelation which changes the saint "from glory unto glory," by the Spirit of the Lord (2 Corinthians 3:18).

Still, there is some things to like about this book. Namely, the fact that the reader is alerted to the fact that God has always veiled Himself in a mystery. If you stop with this book, you'll go no further. But if you use this book as a springboard, there is much to experience.

God does keep secrets. Even great heroes of faith like Abraham, Moses, and the Old Testament prophets faced mysteries about God and his kingdom. Understanding God's plans is like watching a train emerge from a tunnel: you can see the cars that have emerged and get a sense of where the train is going, but you can't see the cars still in the tunnel. While many details of God's revelation train are still shrouded, secrets hidden for centuries are now revealed to us. John Van Diest and Alton Gansky help us see and understand these secrets, which are hiding in plain sight in the words of Jesus and throughout the Bible.
