Top notch watercolors

Haas' art here compares favorably with her first book "The Maggie B." (1975). I am not sure what the "falump!" business was all about, but the story, whimsical as it is, manages to keep on until it reaches a pleasant resolution. The watercolor (with some pastels) are just top notch. And, if you liked this title, you will really enjoy "The Maggie B."

a tradition of excellence

Irene Haas has been like a family friend for over 30 years. As I did, my children love the "Maggie B" and now have fallen in love with "Bess and Bella." A charming story of a little girl's flight of fancy and the most wonderful illustrations.

On a cold winter afternoon Bess and her doll are having a tea party with melted snow and cookie crumbs, when -- falump! -- a little bird named Bella falls from the sky. Bella offers treats for a proper tea, and a new friendship begins. Little does Bess know that this is just the first of many delightful surprises to come during that afternoon.

Young readers will be charmed by Bess and Bella and enchanted by Irene Haas's beautiful artwork that brings them vividly to life.
