Just Ella

One of the best books I have ever read. This book is a thiller for girls of ages 9 and up. Haddix really shows Ella's personality and adds a finishing touch to the well known world of Cinderella, the young, beautiful, ill-treated girl that wins the handsome prince at a ball. She ecapes from her evil stepsisters and lives happily ever after -- until Haddix's witty intellegence comes along. A book that only a genius like Margaret Peterson Haddix can write.

Just Ella

My friend told me that this was an amazing book. However, I have to disagree. While the story itself was a cute and interesting retelling of the classic fairytale, I can't help but notice things. And there were a couple things I didn't like. For instance, all of the characters seemed to be grouped into two categories. Good and bad. There were no middle characters. There was just the good and bad... black and white, no gray area. It really kind of bugged me how people were portrayed to be terrible. It got to the point where the abundance of evil people ruined the plot for me, instead of enhancing it. And of course in typical fairytale/Cinderella fashion, there had to be a happy ending. But I don't feel like the ending did justice to what had been going on in the story, and there were a lot of loose strings left untied.

Being a princess isn't all that....

You've heard the fairytale: a glass slipper, Prince Charming, happily ever after...

Welcome to reality: royal genealogy lessons, needlepoint, acting like "a proper lady," and -- worst of all -- a prince who is not the least bit interesting, and certainly not charming.

As soon-to-be princess Ella deals with her newfound status, she comes to realize she is not "your majesty" material. But breaking off a royal engagement is no easy feat, especially when you're crushing on another boy in the palace.... For Ella to escape, it will take intelligence, determination, and spunk -- and no ladylike behavior allowed.
