"Louise, I Know This Is Insane - You Don't Need To Keep Reminding Me

OK, let me begin by stating that 'Frozen Pancakes & Fake Lashes' by G. Pearl Mak is not what I would consider my usual reading faire. I mean come on, a 56 year old male reading teen chick lit is not only unusual but a little bit creepy (actually a lot creepy). However as a justification for my action let me say that I read this at the request of my 20 year old daughter (whew!).

Negatives:
I found Ms. Mak novel to be lacking in the type of background information and character development that one expects from a solid, well conceived plot. Thinking maybe those aspects of the story are common in this genre of literature and checked with my daughter. She agreed that these two aspects of story telling were missing.

Positives:
It's an easy, pleasant read dealing with a subject matter that is easily relatable in the workplace and home which should help in drawing an audience attentive to the particular lifestyle being depicted. The book also has a rather cute, though predictable ending tailor made for a sequel (as is everything these days).

My Rating: -3 1/2 Stars-.

Wonderful Read

This is a wonderful read about a career oriented woman who is thrust into parenthood by a unexpected pregnancy and details her juggling a baby, a career, and a life, and keeping all intact and keeping her sanity.

Unlike other books or movies that attempt to do so, this book keeps you in tune with the character and keeps you identifying with her. She isn't the butt of a joke at the author's expense and the idea of a working mother is dealt with honorably and in a great way.

The book is cute, funny, and well written, and will surely be an easy read for buy mothers themselves.

Great travel book

Short chapters and fast moving with a semi-predictable storyline -- all these factors make this book perfect for a woman's travel book. The transition from career woman to mom is one many of us can sympathize with and the various surprising aspects of newborn care, for a first time mother, are humorously explored.

If you are a career woman who hasn't yet had that first baby, then this book might give you a taste of what to expect. Balancing motherhood and a job can be a labor intensive operation that isn't totally satisfying. Mary Poppins is not standing outside your door waiting to help out.

Not sure about this book's appeal to men but hard to think of a grouping of women who wouldn't enjoy it. It explores the universally appealing (to a woman) story of a mom trying to do the best thing for her baby - nothing more basic than that to most women.

Entertaining and amusing but flawed

This was a quick enjoyable light book (definitely what we want at certain times in our lives). The book was amusing but often the humor was forced. It annoyed me how many times the characters said "Ha, Ha" or "He, He" - there are ways to express that someone is laughing without constantly using these words.

Yes it was fairly predictable but at the same time there was something compelling about it. It did bring to the forefront many issues that women struggle with when having a baby (actually the struggles for the husband also).

There were too many illogical aspects like nursing exclusively for three months and then leaving the baby with a nanny to work full time without ever even trying to transition to using a bottle - jeesch who would do that??? Basic common sense would clue her in on that but if for some reason it didn't, she's an intelligent woman, who's read "the book" on child rearing... did she skip that chapter? I also struggled with Louise - where were her four raucous boys for the nearly two years that this story took place? There were other unrealistic details to this book but if you overlook those it is a fun lighthearted book that you can read at the beach or on a plane and get a chuckle here and there.

Nothing New Here

I started the book and was really wondering how the book got published. The story idea was a good one, but the writing was very cliche and the dialog stilted. I did a bit of research and found it is self-published by one of Amazon's companies.

The book has the standard complement of characters: Amorous boss, reliable motherly secretary, morally loose best friend, good old reliable husband. Another reviewer mentioned the protag. whining all the way through the book. Yes! This woman was miserable, unhappy to be carrying a life, unhappy with her size, her economic status (which as a lawyer driving a BMW is better than most), unhappy with being the breadwinner, yet complained about having to give that up. She treated her husband horribly. Angela was a little hard to like. The book has some fun moments but the humor is too forced and falls flat much of the time.

I loved the idea of the book, but it just didn't really meet my expectations as far as quality of writing. I was looking for something new and didn't find it here.

Angela is a good bet for making partner at her firm next year. Indeed, she is well on her way to conquering the world when she finds it abruptly turned upside down: she learns that she is unexpectedly expecting . . . a baby. With zero exposure to children and absolutely no idea how to raise an infant, Angela tackles the demands of motherhood while desperately trying to hang on to her first baby, the one which she has nurtured so well for so many years - her career. Along the way she loses touch with her husband and unwittingly acquires an unwelcome but tempting admirer, further complicating an already thorny mess. And just when things reach what seems to be an unbearable boiling point, Angela discovers the ultimate betrayal . . . How will she ever recover? Told candidly in an engaging voice, Frozen Pancakes and Fake Lashes captures the tale of Everywoman's struggle to balance the overwhelming demands of marriage, career and new baby, and chronicles Her quest to regain Her pre-baby mojo.
