Devestating Holocaust Story

After my teenage daughter listened to Alter speak at her Middle School in Oregon, she insisted I read this book and go see him for myself. In reading this tale of Alter's life I was struck by how his life was damaged by hundreds of people who chose to look the other way while his entire family was destroyed along with thousands of others. As I traveled on the journey through his story however I began to see what an impact small acts of human kindness by a handful of people had in saving his life. Now thousands of people gather to listen to Alter remember the story of all the people who are not here to share with us. In his book Alter mentions an old African adage that suggests when an old person dies a library is lost. We so appreciate Alter being the library of our conscience and helping us to remember the horrors so that we never allow them to be repeated. Alter has truly had a full life and continues to give back by telling his story in order to encourage young people to be good citizens of their world.

From a Name to a Number, Alter Wiener, author

Alter Wiener is a survivor--a Holocaust survivor. He writes his story of survival in his book: From a Name to a Number: A Holocaust Survivor's Autobiography. The autobiography is an honest and powerful account of an eye witness survivor to the horrors inflicted upon humankind by Hitler during World War II and the Holocaust. It is not often we are able to find a first person account, as many Holocaust survivors have long departed this earth. We need to read books about the Holocaust--lest we ever forget the tragedy. I recommend this book to others.
Denise George, co-author of The Secret Holocaust Diaries: The Untold STory of Nonna Bannister (April 2009, Tyndale House Publishers).

Adolescent students love to read this book also!

I read Alter's book right after his first presentation to my 8th grade Language Arts class. The details Alter provided in his book gave me a deepened understanding of his life, and so much compassion for what he and others experienced. Alter gave my students a gift by telling his story orally, and many eagerly buy his book each year he returns. For those who can't hear him tell his story, reading his book is the next best thing. I respect the honesty in Alter's writing, as he candidly reveals what many survivors choose not to talk about, and what many readers are not accustomed to reading. We all (hopefully) know the horrors of the concentration camps, but how many of us know the lasting impact the experience had on victims as they tried to live normal lives afterwards - to find romance, marry, raise a family, create a new extended family? I hope this book stays on bookstore, home and library shelves for many, many years.

Amazing man!

This inside look at the horrors of the Holocaust serves as a reminder of what must never happen again. Mr. Weiner has shared his story, in person, with my 8th grade students - he is truly amazing. Perhaps the most valuable lesson he has to teach is that of acceptance and forgiveness. His book will both break your heart and inspire you to touch a life for the better. This is one of the most valuable resources available to my students as we look at the Holocaust.

Alter Wiener's father was brutally murdered on September 11, 1939 by the German invaders of Poland. Alter was then a boy of 13. At the age of 15 he was deported to Blechhammer, a Forced Labor Camp for Jews, in Germany. He survived five camps. Upon liberation, by the Russian Army on May 9, 1945, Alter weighted 80 lbs as reflected on the book's cover. Alter Wiener is one of the very few Holocaust survivors still living in Portland OR. He had moved to Oregon several years ago and since then he has shared his life story with 300 audiences in universities, colleges, middle and high schools, Churches, Synagogues, prisons, clubs etc. He has also been interviewed by radio and TV stations as well as the press Wiener's autobiography is a testimony to an unfolding tragedy taking place in WWII. It has a message what prejudice may lead to and how tolerance is imperative. This book is not just Wiener's life story but it reveals many responses to his story. Hopefully, it will enable many readers to truly understand such levels of horror and a chance to empathize with the unique plight of the Holocaust victims.
