Read the 12-foot teepee.

I found this book profoundly moving. It speaks about child abuse in a personal way that relays the terrible harm that such experiences do. Unflinchingly facing the reality of physical abuse and the affects it can have on a whole family, and on the individuals in it, the 12 Foot Tee-pee shows that with the help of God, and loving family and friends, even those who are scarred can come to know peace.

This is an important subject that far too few people are brave enough to speak about. This book has tremendous impact, precisely because it is open, frank, and honest about the struggle with darkness and evil. It gives us hope because in it, we come to see the power of love to overcome that evil. It's love for her family, for God, and for her friends that motivates Maggie to overcome her dark past. It's the love of God, her family, and her friends that supports her and makes possible her redemption.

Big words. Serious subject. Very, very good book. Not light reading, but worthwhile reading.

A story for our time ...

Burdened with the emotional debris from an abused childhood, plagued by myriad crises, Maggie launches an improbable quest for spiritual rebirth by building a teepee in her backyard.

Amidst oak trees and blackberry brambles, Maggie finds her salvation, an untraditional path for sure, but it works for her. Her ironic view of the world and sense of humor never abandon her.

Maggie's story faces painful issues that we all need to face, sooner or later. What do you do when your life falls apart? When your health fails? When your career self-destructs? When the money runs out? What if it all goes bad at the same time?

This is a book about coping with your worst fears and finding faith when faith is the only thing left ... and somehow, with all of that, coming out a whole person.

We all decide what will define us. When bad stuff happens, regular people - me, you, everyone - tend to let the bad stuff that happens TO us define us. To get past that, to move on, you need to know in your gut that who you are and what has happened to you are not the same. You need to let the bad stuff go, hand it off to whatever higher power you recognize, and move on.

For Maggie, the road to healing was the building of a teepee which, to her, became analogous to climbing a mountain.
The book deals with painful issues: child abuse and getting past it as an adult; health, aging, lack of money, loss of career and status ... but in the end, it's about finding joy despite disasters and loving life, even when life doesn't seem to love you.

It's a sad book, a funny book, a shocking book, a relevant book ... and a great read.
