Honest, Helpful Advice for a Copywriting Business

This is a very well written, entertaining, informative, and helpful account of what it takes to start a freelance copywriting business. Everything from suggestions on how to write different types of marketing copy to advice about how to manage money and run the business is included. This is probably the best single volume on the subject.

A good business bible from Steve Slaunwhite

I had the good fortune to take a course given by Steve Slaunwhite, and he covers the B2B market quite well. His website is quire well organized, and I brought this book, not knowing he was the same author of the course I took. This book is very practical, and I recommend it, for its down-to-earth approach. Steve made a successful career transition
From being in sales to becoming a top B2B freelance copywriter. He inspired me go plunge into the freelance copywriting world, after being downsized by a major corporation.

Solid Book to Get You Started

I bought this book because I am a beginning freelance copywriter. The book covers pretty much every area of starting out as a copywriter - what you need to have set up, getting clients, writing the copy, keeping in touch with clients, etc. It has a couple of interesting interviews with successful copywriters at the end, and even comes with a CD. I thought it was a very helpful book, although there were some things I thought were lacking:

PROS

- Covers virtually every area of starting a copywriting business
- Written well, in a manner which is realistic yet encouraging
- Walks through a day in Steve Slaunwhite's shoes
- Has several example forms that Steve Slaunwhite uses

CONS

- Some of the information is slightly dated (technology-wise...the copyright is 2005). For instance, some of the information pertaining to the internet has changed in the last 4 years.
- If you've read other Steve Slaunwhite books, some of the information is repeated here. For example, his "Everything Copywriting" has some of the exact same material in this book (repeated word for word).
- The cd is nice, but really mostly contains the exact forms from the book, so it's not actual additional information per say.

Overall, I would still recommend this book to anyone looking to start out as a copywriter. It's encouraging, helpful, and does its job thoroughly.
