Fun exploring in Spanish

My family, including children ages 8 and 11, enjoyed this dictionary on our recent trip to Mexico. It is too large to practically use in conversation, but it is great for thumbing though to browse and learn new words that are related by subject. The pictures are lovely and amazingly detailed. This dictionary is arranged by topic, so the index is also helpful if you're looking for a specific word. Occasionally the index is a bit confusing because words are listed exactly as they appear on the pictures. For example, we had a hard time finding the Spanish word for "kidney" because it was listed under "right kidney" and "left kidney." Because this is a picture dictionary, it is primarily a NOUN dictionary. Adjectives are also included if they differentiate between types of items. You will not find verbs or many prepositions, so this won't be your only Spanish-English dictionary. Nevertheless, this is a great resource for families, for exploring Spanish, and for expanding your topical vocabulary.

A Visual Treat

This book exceeded my expectation, I purchased it to do language work with my son who is on the autistic spectrum. This book is split into many categories such as earth, vegetable kingdom, house, clothing, animal kingdom, science, society, human being, sports, architecture etc to name just a few. What I love about this book is that all the pictures are beautifully drawn and detailed on a white background, the drawings seem to have more depth and detail as that would be seen from a photo. There is no text on the pages other than the labels, which makes it non distracting. It is very informative and detailed in the sense many of the pictures have detailed labelling i.e. the human skeleton, the main bones are labelled, then on the following pages are pictures of hand, foot etc with more detailed labelling of the bones in these paticular parts. Things like space shuttles are shown, with cross sections cut out with labelling of different parts. This book is wonderful for kids and adults and visually beautiful to look out with thousands of illustrations of extremely high quality. Whilst this is a bulky book, the only criticism I have is the text used in the labelling is quite small. However, this may have been done so not to detract from the beauty of the pictures.

Foir me this book has been wonderful for my son who has speech and language delays as he is very visual and a visual learner, he looks at this book everyday, and it has helped alot with his speech because rather than saying it's a space shuttel, an aeroplane or a dog, we can look at the pictures and start talking about features and functions i.e. my son loves space shuttles as it is labelled in this book we can look at different parts of the space shuttle and learn what they are i.e. rudder, observation window, flight deck etc, this enriches his language as he learns to label and describe different aspects of the space shuttle.

I would say this book is in a class of it's own and is appropriate for a wide age range from which every one can learn and benefit. This book scores high in all areas for me, and I give it a 5 plus.

Great visual desk dictionary...

I am a teacher of Spanish and own a number of visual dictionaries, including the Firefly Five Language Dictionary, the Firefly Spanish/English Dictionary, the Firefly Mini Spanish/English Dictionary, and the DK Five Language Visual Dictionary. I prefer the Firefly dictionaries because they tactfully include the gender of words as a superscript after the word rather than as an indirect article, as in the DK dictionary. The latter has the ill-effect of creating ambiguous genders in instances where the indirect article is truncated:

For example: garlic - l'ail - der Knoblauch - el ajo - l'aglio

The size of this hardcover edition make it more appropriate for use as a desk dictionary rather than a pocket edition. It does not contain any more information than the Mini edition, but the Firefly Five Language Dictionary contains almost twice as many pages and words. Given that the image layouts used in all of the Firefly dictionaries are from a common master, the page count is a very good indication of the word count. Frankly, the quantity of the words in the hardcover edition is ample for even most advanced students of Spanish. And the absence of the extra three languages makes it less cluttered and confusing.

As with any visual dictionary, this one focuses on nouns. Students of the Spanish will still want to have a quality pocket bilingual dictionary like the Larousse:
Larousse Student Dictionary Spanish-English / English-Spanish (Larousse School Dictionary)

And a quality Spanish-only dictionary like the Dictionario Practico del Estudiante:
Diccionario Practico del Estudiante/ Student Dictionary

Firefly French/English Visual Dictionary

This book is very informative. When you need to know how to translate the small details of everyday items then this book is excellent! I would not recommend it for general French studies but for advanced students and frequent visitors to Francophone countries it is very useful.

Wide range of categories with exhaustive vocabulary.

This book is an excellent reference guide for any English-speaking student of Spanish or visa-versa. With 28,000 Spanish and English terms, you can find the noun for just about anything. The illustrations are good, but not as visually-stunning as other visual dictionaries I've found. On the other hand, the high paper quality and hard-bound exterior help make up for that, ensuring long-term use (as reference materials usually take more of a beating than other types of literature). One possible drawback is that it's purely nouns (some other visual dictionaries include relevant fixed phrases, adjectives, and verbs under some categories). All in all, however, a good, study visual dictionary with an exhuastive number of terms (nouns).
