The Bookschlepper definitely recommends

Out Stealing Horses by Per Petterson; translated from the Norwegian by Anne Born: This is a beautiful novel, at times as swiftly paced as the river which floats the timber, at other times as silent as the midsommer's sun and always as intricate as the pattern of trees against the sky. An old man makes a new life for himself in an isolated cabin; a meeting with his closest "neighbor" revives a childhood acquaintance and recalls for him the last summer he spent with his father in a similar cabin right after the War. Whether Trond is 15 or 67, he observes his world closely. Translator Born clearly captures the essence of the Norwegian; Petterson refracts Norway in a prism of forest, flowing water and the hytte.

I love this book

As an avid but selective reader, I'm careful about the books I choose for my reading pleasure. This was definitely one of the better choices. Simply written yet able to quickly immerse you into the heart and mind of the author/narrator. A lovely cadance that eases you through the events of his life as it unfolds. Even the retelling in memories of past events has the power to place you, the reader, in the very moment the memory itself is being created...you can feel the warmth of the sun and the breeze on your skin, you can feel the shock and the pain upon discovering long kept secrets and the betrayal of innoncence lost. Even the tempermant of the dogs as described by this talented author is palpable. An excellent read...again and again.

Father and Son

One brilliant and gripping piece of writing, plunging this reader deep into the hestitancy, fear and intimacy of the narrator's experience. The scent of the northern landscape is everpresent. Descriptions of rural life the equal of Tolstoy; a deeply felt portrait which brought to mind some of the immediacy last encountered, and long ago, in the best of William Warton. I'm thinking of his, 'Dad' a far sadder tale than Jack Lemmon brought to the screen. Petterson deft touch, emotional honesty, his unflinching reflectiveness are salutory. Highly recommended.

Excellent writing!

Time and time again I felt like Petterson wrote things that I had thought and felt and seen, but which had never quite risen to the level of verbal consciousness. He is a keen observer and an outstanding writer. I found I really cared about Trond, like he was a real person who I knew in some intimate way.

We were going out stealing horses. That was what he said, standing at the door to the cabin where I was spending the summer with my father. I was fifteen. It was 1948 and oneof the first days of July.

Trond?s friend Jon often appeared at his doorstep with an adventure in mind for the two of them. But this morning was different. What began as a joy ride on ?borrowed? horses ends with Jon falling into a strange trance of grief. Trond soon learns what befell Jon earlier that day?an incident that marks the beginning of a series of vital losses for both boys.

Set in the easternmost region of Norway, Out Stealing Horses begins with an ending. Sixty-seven-year-old Trond has settled into a rustic cabin in an isolated area to live the rest of his life with a quiet deliberation. A meeting with his only neighbor, however, forces him to reflect on that fateful summer.
