From Someone WITH Experience!

Even if you never plan to use the services of a male hustler/model/masseur/escort, and are just curious like I was, this book is a joy to read, and full of fascinating information. Author Joseph Itiel really knows about hustlers. He describes his dealings with hustlers over a period of 35 years from all over the world. I couldn't put this book down. It's full of information that will make you well-informed about finding a hustler, figuring out how much to pay them, and making sure it's an experience that is safe and pleasurable to both parties. In this way you'll enjoy the experience and be in control of the situation at all times. I was delighted to find that someone has finally written an honest, intelligent, well-researched book about this subject. It's the author's experiences that he relates so honestly in this book that to me made it a real page turner. Some were funny, amusing, and others hard to believe, though true. The authors' goal with this book is to make us well informed about the hustling experience and I think he has succeeded. He even feels meeting with a hustler regularly can be more satisfying and mutually beneficial than having a steady relationship that can become boring. It's great that he decided to share this part of his life with us. Highly recommended! Another great gay studies book from Harrington Park Press.

Helpful, practical advice

Mr. Itiel's approach to sex is almost comically business-oriented. Nonetheless, I found his very practical approach reassuring and helpful. Some of the stories are funny, some pathetic.

I'd rank the book above the more popular _Hustlers, Escorts and Porn Stars_ by Matt Adams, although Adam's book gives more actual advice.

Refreshingly Candid

Completely unashamed of his personal history as a faithful and longtime consumer of male prostitutes, Joseph Itiel genially walks his reader through a thoughtful, reflective, and non-sensationalized argument for embracing the ready availability of hustlers and their services. In contrast to the frequent disappointments and frustrations of cruising in bars and baths, Itiel paints a vivid and, at times, inspiring picture of what a gay man's sex life could potentially be - if he has the courage and wherewithal to think ahead, budget his finances, and invest a bit of time in doing his research. The result of such efforts, according to the author, can lead to the lifelong enjoyment of regular, stress-free, and satisfying sex.

While certain readers may balk at his apparent disregard for the pervasiveness of drug and alcohol dependency among his paid partners, Itiel has merely accepted these factors as an unavoidable reality. Thus, rather than constantly lecturing his hustlers about their substance abuse, he endeavors instead to accept them for who they are, treat them with the respect they deserve as human beings, and acknowledge that his dealings with them, although much more than cold business transactions, are far less than those of a loving and committed relationship. Furthermore, Itiel argues that this kind of treatment is much healthier than the approach of the many social workers who, according to him, uselessly sermonize to hustlers from a puritanical pulpit that sees all sex-for-sale as wrong. All they accomplish, he argues, is to pollute his hustlers' self-esteem and irreparably damage their ability to engage in unaffected sex. To be honest, I find this line of reasoning unacceptably simplistic. Additionally, whenever Itiel expresses his frustration over the fact that the helping professions too often advise hustlers to discontinue their hustling while simultaneously failing to offer them any viable life alternatives, I question whether he has any hard evidence in support of such a broad and unsubstantiated claim. His argument would carry much more weight if he took the time to name some of those social services and then strove to illustrate why he felt they were inadequate. By failing to do so, he renders his own position less than fully convincing.

Yet despite this shortcoming, I am nevertheless persuaded that Itiel's approach is honorable, progressive, and constructive. His book compels me to ask whether the social workers would be required at all if hustlers sensed that every member of society were as enlightened as the author. What might life be like for a sex worker if he was never judged, disdained, or condemned for his life choices; if he was celebrated as a sexual and psychological health practitioner rather than shunned as a degenerate; if he was allowed to operate free of police harassment and with the reasonable assurance of a safe working environment; if he was proudly and reliably paid his fee in gratitude for his valuable time and services? I strongly believe that Itiel's own experience points the way to happier and healthier buyers and sellers of gay sex, and his book thus becomes the fascinating and thought-provoking roadmap toward that very destination. Recommended.

Excellent and Wonderfully Refreshing

I loved this book! It is honest and candid and refreshing in its accurate portrayal of the hustler/client relationship. I myself am a sex worker and although the book is written from the client's perspective, I related to so many of Mr. Itiel's experiences. And I must say, from my own experience in the business, that I completely agree with him. Establishing an ongoing relationship with a hustler is both beneficial to the hustler and to the client. My warmest and most meaningful experiences I have had as a sex worker have been with clients that I have established an ongoing relationship with. A friendship and an intimacy develops that I find truly gratifying. So hats off to Mr. Itiel for writing this book - a much needed addition that will help break down old stereotypes about male hustlers and help people realize the benefits and the gains to be had from seeking out long term relationships with those of us in the world's oldest profession!

A Consumer?s Guide to Male Hustlers gives you exciting insight into all you ever wanted to know about hustlers but were too embarrassed to ask. You?ll find answers to questions such as where and how to find hustlers, how much to pay them, and how to make it an experience that is satisfying to both parties. Author Joseph Itiel shares with readers his personal experiences and observations, describing his dealings with hustlers, over a period of about 35 years, in many different countries.

Throughout A Consumer?s Guide to Male Hustlers, Itiel narrates personal anecdotes, lending an intimate dimension to his general observations. He describes the hustler scene in the United States and abroad, dispelling many erroneous notions about hustlers by addressing such topics as:under what circumstances sex-for-money arrangements are exploitative (a comparison of male hustlers and female prostitutes)emotional involvement and control between clients and hustlersthe notion that hustlers are only for the wealthywhether or not hustlers are likely carriers of sexually transmitted diseaseswhether or not it is dangerous to pick up hustlerswhy hustlers hustlethe differences between street hustlers, models (or escorts), and masseurslegal issues associated with hustlingregular sessions with hustlers as an emotional and libidinal sedative

It is the contention of the author that hustlers are an under-used resource in the gay community, especially valuable to those with a vigorous sex appetite but no steady partner. This opportunity is often shunned because potential clients feel guilty about hiring hustlers. The author hopes that by reading this book, you will come to understand that the hustler experience, meeting with hustlers regularly, can be mutually exciting and satisfying for both parties.
