Best $20 I EVER Spent!!!

I first read this book in 1998, and then bought my own copies, some to share. I still give them as gifts. Some ignore the book but some come back later, very impressed. Glenn Latham really walks you through the steps and logic of why and how. He makes it work for you if you will just follow his very clear and easy directions. Once you try it and are convinced, you will shake your head that you ever spanked a child previous to this. Once you know what works MUCH better, you realize that spanking and other poor parenting techniques only sabatoge yourself and your children. You will have no desire to return to noneffective parenting once you see it working. I only wish I'd bought it sooner, but very glad I bought it when I did.

Best parenting book I've ever read

Wow. Complete. Thought-provoking. Practical. The principles work. Doesn't matter what age your children are, there are principles for every age. My favorite chapter is "When All Else Fails." Any parent looking for a practical, how-to book, this is it. Dr. Latham studied parenting for many years and combines the results of his research with his own experience of living these principles. Very powerful; the best and most complete parenting book I've ever read.

Just OK

I got this book based on other reviewers but beware - it seem to be written by a right wing conservative with traditional parenting advice. If you are have a child who seems to be off the charts and off the walls may I suggest that a better book is "Raising Your Spirited Child: A Guide for Parents Whose Child Is More Intense, Sensitive, Perceptive, Persistent, Energetic" by Mary Sheedy Kurcinka. The spirited child book is much better for the issues I am facing with my six year old.

When my husband and I were just getting started with the whole parenting thing, a good friend of ours recommended this book: The Power of Positive Parenting by Dr. Glenn I. Latham.

There weren't any copies in our library, so she let me borrow her book for a day (she couldn't spare it any longer) so I could browse through to see if I liked it.
I loved it.
I immediately bought a copy from Amazon.

"This book is written for parents who care enough to learn the skills necessary to raise children well in these difficult times.
It is more a manual than it is a book; hence, it must be read, then reread, then read some more. Wide margins have been provided for note taking. Use it as a tool with which to build your family."

I really love the principles and easily applicable techniques provided in this book.
It truly is a "wonderful way to raise children".

The essence of this book is found in the following statement of Dr. Sidney W. Bijou:

Research has shown that the most effective way to reduce problem behavior in children is to strengthen desirable behavior through positive reinforcement rather than trying to weaken undesirable behavior using aversive or negative processes.

I really love this book.
It addresses pretty much everything.
There are sections on all types of behavior from toddlers up through teenagers.

Sections on Being in Control, Consequences, Using Time to Your Advantage, Proactive Responding to Reactive Adolescent Behavior, Questioning Children About Their Behavior, Building Self Esteem, Fussy Babies, Dealing with Hate & Anger.
Sections on Eliminating Lying & Stealing, Thumb Sucking, Tantrums, and Tattling.
And more on Toilet Training, Refusing to Do As Told, Sibling Rivalry, Living with Teenagers: A Better Way, Managing Television Viewing, Helping Children Achieve in School, Dealing with Substance Abuse, even a section entitled "When All Else Fails".

Within the chapters, he gives realistic scenarios with actual conversations played out with examples of what to do/say and what not to do/say.

I love this book.
I need to refer to this and reread this book so much more often than I do.
But I'm glad I'm posting about it today, so I can renew my study skills so I can be a better, positive parent.
