A Very Good Resource

Okay, I will admit it. If could get only one book to be your preparedness Bible, this would not be the book. However, that's not what this book is supposed to be. It is an awesome page turner that will keep you engaged and make you think about what a total economic collapse of our country would be like. (Actually, a total societal collapse precipitated by an economic collapse). This book is very rich, with lessons for everyone to learn, from the novice who is a newcomer to emergency preparedness, to the gear junkie to the technical geeks. Some of the descriptions of jury-rigging generators and other technical scenarios were a bit over my head, but I appreciate that these can be something I can refer back to if I ever get more skills in those areas. Was the book worthy of a Pulitzer Prize? Absolutely not. There are some character development and plot shortcomings to be sure. However, as a book that is meant to keep your attention and whet your appetite for more, it is a hit. I do have one warning though; don't start reading this book unless you are prepared to spend enough time reading straight through! It will hold your interest very well!

Interesting way of presenting survival basics after TEOTWAWKIT

I have enjoyed the first half this book describing gear, weapons and security protocols. It's indeed a lot easier to absorb the bits of useful knowledge when it's been presented to you in a form of a story where each character is used to present a specific set of survival skills (weaponry, engineering, medicine, tactics and such). I'd agree, though, that it is nearly impossible for an average Joe who lives in a city (suburbs) and got a wife and a couple of kids to take care of to maintain a remote yet efficient retreat with a stockpile of food and gear to last you long enough to survive until the crops would grow, the chickens would produce enough eggs to feed everyone or until a cavalry will arrive... Another thing that I tend to be rather skeptical about is an idea of a secluded retreat per se. The human kind has survived some pretty nasty curves along its history and seems that living in packs did help a lot to the cause of staying alive (the bigger a pack was - the better). One fort protected by a dozen or less even well prepared men is likely to withstand some spontaneous attacks of amateur looters armed with riot guns or small handguns at best and caring a limited supply of ammo. No matter how dumb those guys could be, they will eventually join forces and form into a large wolf pack which will soon learn the best way to handle just about any standalone, fortified house. Seriously, guys, how many of as will be able to put together a group of defenders large, organized and prepared enough to successfully defend a small property during even a short term siege? Consider me a pessimist but I'd say - not many.
In regards to the possibility of launching a guerrilla war against regular troops (especially UN :-) who cannot even defend themselves when you come to think of it)and using air plains to eliminate enemy ground forces...please... Scientific fiction is indeed a great genre...
All-in-all: The book is a good source of info on what you may need if/when SHTF. You'll find a deep insight into weaponry and ammo characteristics (w/ great cross comparison), learn very basic ER procedures, some escape & evasion techniques. It'll also introduce you to an elementary engineering, and some interesting house improvement ideas (wind/solar power generators, building structure, fuel preservation + means of communication, SOPs and such). It's certainly good source of information but you might want to use some discretion while reading and retain whatever you believe is useful for you.

Literary "Edutainment" for the survival-minded.

Having read Mr. Rawles latest non-fiction "How to Survive the End of the World as We Know It: Tactics, Techniques, and Technologies for Uncertain Times" and reading his blog, I wanted to check out Patriots. I didn't have high hopes and expected "vanity published" literary quality. Mr. Rawles is not going to be compared to Neal Stephenson or Dan Simmons with his writing style, but it was effective. The narrative approach fit the very long time frame of the book --- if Mr. Rawles had tried for deep character development through a 3rd person limited writing style I'm not certain you could move the published book in a wheelbarrow.

With that said, I enjoyed Patriots much more due to the emotional tie with the characters vs. just a "how-to," although Patriots has plenty of that too. I knew a lot about a couple "survival" subjects, some of many more, and almost nothing about even more --- great "edutainment." After reading Patriots you'll at least give some thought to your level of preparedness and your trust in the innate goodness of human beings --- those in the book that had a lot of the former and little of the latter do much better in the end.

Patriots

This is one of the best books I have ever read, NO JOKE. If you buy and read any book in the future, this is the one to BUY!!! Also purchase other books from James Wesley Rawles, you won't regret it! I rarely if ever read books for leisure, but was recommended this book from a friend. I have read it 4 times and recommend it to everyone I know. Check It Out!

should be required reading in high school

this book makes you think. day after day life goes by fairly easily for most of us in the usa.this book shows us just how unprepared we have become as a whole of society.the author does a great job of giving valuable information to the readers while maintaining a very interesting story line. love the ending it`s all in the details. should be required reading for high schoolers in this country, nothing is ever free. people fought and died for our freedoms in this country and i have my doubts as to the caliber of americans today. one thing this book did was inspire me to form a neighborhood shooting club and practice once a month, something i have wanted to do for a while, now if i could just figure out how to get a capital letter on this thing i wouldn`t look like an idiot.

Part novel, part survivalist-handbook, Patriots tells of a small group of friends facing every American's worst nightmare?the total collapse of society. The stock market plummets and hyperinflation cripples commerce and then a seemingly isolated financial crisis passes the tipping point when an unprepared government fails to act. Practically overnight, the fragile institutions of democracy fall apart and every American is forced to survive on their own.

Evading mobs of desperate, out-of-control citizens who have turned Chicago into a wasteland of looting and mayhem, this novel's protagonists make their way to a shared secure ranch in the wilds of northern Idaho. Here the survival-driven group fends off vicious attacks from the outside and eventually assists in restoring order to the country. The compelling, fast-paced action-adventure novel has readers jotting notes and referencing the book's impressive index for informative survivalist tips on everything from setting up a secure shelter to treating traumatic flesh wounds.
