great for everyone

I'm a international student in usa which means I have some problem with crochet pattern. This book is very helpful because it has symbol and picture to show how to do it. Since I have a basic crochet , I can easily follow instruction . recommand for a beginner!!

I still use this book

I've been crocheting for years and I still use this book. This is the best reference book I've read. If you want to learn how to crochet, this is the book to get. The instructions in the beginning of the book (info on hooks, yarn, and the stitches) are clear and explained well. I find Illustrations in most crochet books not always the most user-friendly, but the explanation along with the illustration in this case makes for better understanding of the stitches. The pattern pictures are great, good contrasting colors make it easier to actually visualize the design. Learning to read a pattern can seem daunting at times, and I don't think the how-to of reading a pattern is any better in this book than I've seen in others. But I believe if you go through it patiently, by the time you start doing the patterns in the back half of the book, you'll understand it better over practice and exposure.

If you want to learn how to crochet or greatly improve your technique, practice doing the blocks/patterns in the back half of this book. Don't worry about doing the projects, there are better design out there (just say "No" to the philosopher jacket) forget them. Start from the first pattern, repeat it until you are comfortable with it and then go on to the next. This book will be in your library for years, well used but always a favorite.

Ahhh! The Philosopher's coat!

I've made two of the philosopher's coats in different color palettes, and it was challenging and fun and great! Note to advanced crocheters: the directions are somewhat limited. I guess she figures that if you get to this stage, you don't need everything spelled out. I've had a ton of compliments on both coats. The other patterns are fine, but this was the reason I bought the book. Don't be intimidated! You'll love the challenge of it, and when you're done, you know you've created something very special.

Fantastic book for all skill levels!

This book has fantastic how to diagrams as well as projects! It provides a history of crocheting that really adds. I bought this book for my daughter for Christmas, and after looking through it with her, I had to have one for myself. Great author, great book, great choice.
